St eve Leivan shot his WR400F to the front of the pack a nd controlled the pa ce early. with local boy Bob by Duncan close be hind on his YZ426F. With conditions wet and slippery due to ovemig ht thu nderstorms. the pack· includ ing a small field of only six AA ride rs " stayed bun ch ed up for mu c h of the opening lap. Near the e nd of the la p. Leivan lo st the front end in the most for any rider so fa r. The 34 ·year·old National Champion from Galva . Illinois. posted the fastest time of the day. winning the 400cc class a t the Variety Riders climb on J uly 9 . Stewart set the fast time early in the first rou nd when he nailed a very good 3 .396·sec· a nd tim e o n his Jackson Performance KTM 380. and that tim e held up through the whole first ro und o f all cla sses . . In second-round action, however, Stewart so me loo se roc k s and wen t fro m first to last. It wa s the begi nning of a day long strugg le for really turne d it on with a sizzling 3.243-second th e seve n- ti me champ. When Leivan we nt down, Thiele took over, and from tha t point on h e was never chal len ged , -putting in co nsistent lap times of just o ver 47 minutes. "The race was too lon g to j ust go flat out," said Thiele after the event, "so I just tried to be c o nsiste nt li nd not m ak e mist akes. I d idn't time to rai se the stakes for any cha lle ngers. And it was need ed . as both Butch Fetters and T o m Daniels beat his first-round time in th e sec ond ro und . Paul Hackbarth was Stewart's closest c h allenger in th e 400c c class . cardi ng really know what kind of a lea d I had . so I was still ridin g p retty hard a ll the wa y to the e nd . Dunca n started to get sick la te o n lap one. He toughed it out fo r th ree laps befo re calling it a da y. but he still Howell p ulle d out of the first turn side by s ide. Chris Nesbitt also pu t in three lap s before smashing h is ra d ia to r, still jump headi ng in to th e se cond turn. Ho well was sec o nd . and Woody Carls on and Sea n Harris were battling over t he third po sition . taking fourth AA. Mike Wind mann loaded up after his th ird lap . simply saying. "I'm done: At the e nd of the first lap. Leachman wa s out Brandon Forrester suffered engine failure near front by two seco nds. V ic Walk er was c h argi ng from a m idpack st art and had momentum on his side ; he pa ssed Leachman just before th e wh ite flag ca me out. At the finish, Harris w on t he N ov ic e cl ass. ah ead o f all the Intermed ia t es. Walker took th e win in th e Intermediat e class . Leac h man was second and Rob Wil sh ir e to ok th ird . In moto two , Lea chman on c e again had th e best reaction time off th e co n crete st art ing pad. In second wa s Mike Hibner , who fi nished fourth in th e fi rst mota . Wilshire was th ird , and right behind him was Harris, who ma de qu ick work o f th e r ider s in front o f him by putting th em behind him and th en pu lli ng a lead on th e pa ck. Hibn er als o passed Lea chman and was looking for th e overa ll win, with Walker in fourth. O n lap six o f the nine-lap ra ce. Walker was in th ird . and tha t wou ld lo ck up th e o ve r- three. Local 250cc B rider Aaron Shaw seized the opportunity and was th e only other rider to co m plete six laps, doi ng so w ith a t ime of 5:31 :40 to w in his cla ss and finish third overall. When all was said and done. onl y 34 riders took the checke red flag " a mere 22 percent of those en te re d. Eric Wheelwright was also fast. as he blasted aw a y. lap ping most of the Master B usual . and to ok t he third spot w ith a fine 3.438-second first -round time , j u st five-thou- fame and gl ory - wer en't disappointed w ith ri ders . Dennis Boulwa re was also a pow erful for c e. c ro ssing o ver the finish line a fa st second. but unfortunately he did not start the sandths of a second behind Doubl estein. George Spe aring, riding fa st and sm oo th on his Yamaha , sec ur ed seco nd . Chris Cumbo ce rtai nly ove rcame his midpack start and placed a we ll-deserv ed thi rd . Willenbor g led every inch of the way in the second moto. Co lin Birtles controlled second. followed by Spearing in third . tion, but it was too late to c atc h Hibner.
