Six- ye ar -o ld J ena Hiltz and he r buddies like the new swing set the best of all. Mark Cheza put his large KTM 380 out in fro nt of the Ove r 35 class, with Kreg Bigelow hot on his heels. J im Marsa ck held down third , foll owed closely by both Craig Pickett and Gary Seibert. Cheza used the open track and his open bike to keep his advantage over Bigelow, as the big power was just the ticket in the deep , wet sand. Cheza kept Bigel ow at bay for the first half of the moto, with Marsack some eight second s back in third. The real race was for fourth. as both Scott Curry and Jeff Himanek pushed past Seibert and set their sights on Pickett. who was holding down a strong fourth after being off the bike for more than three months due to a broken wrist. With th e wh it e flag out, B igelow closed in on Cheza's rear wheel . and it was any one 's race. When the two reappeared, Bigelow was out front and Cheza was som e six seconds back. thou gh a comfortable 12 seconds ahead of Planet Honda rider Marsa ck. Fourth went to Pickett. and Himanek held off Curry for fifth . A heavy rain fell between motos on e and tw o , making th e sand heavier and the hardpacked sect ions slicke r. How ever, that was short -lived, as Gross pa ssed him in tum tw o on lap fiv e. Gro ss' march toward the lead continued as he piloted his Team Hyper Cycle Suzuki-sponsored GSX-RIIOO into posi ti on just behind Graves. Down the front straight at the sta rt of lap six, Gros s momenta rily passed Graves but backe d off as th ey hea d ed into turn o ne. Gross passed Grav es a few turns later and th is ti m e he made it stick. Haskov ec re-emerg ed in the top three at th e sta rt of lap 10 aft er he drafted and pa ssed Graves on th e front str aight. Soon afterward, Gross pas sed Kovarick in the lon g tum -eight swee per to emerge with the race lead. How ever , Kovari ck wasn't gi vi ng up easily, and he m oved ah ead of Gr o ss as the ra cer s wen t through th e tighter sections of the rac etr ac k . In the 750cc cla ss, Er ic O 'Connor a nd Kale b Northrup battled it ou t on the ir incredibly fast 750cc t hree-c ylind e r . t w o - str o k e Kawasakis. O 'Co nnor nipped Northrup in their seco nd heat, but Northrup retu med by beating Mike Barnard in the losers bracket to set up a shootout between the two triples for the class win . The two flew over th e big jump at the top nea rly simultaneously, but Northrup took the win. Du e to the format, Northrup would have to beat O'Connor again. Th e two lined up opposite one an other for the thi rd time. This time th e win went to O 'Connor for the class title. but both moved on to the T op Eliminator co ntest. The Open cl ass be came a duel between Justin Odergaard, on his Harley-powered Buell , and Curti s Sullivan. on his big-bore Harley . Sul livan beat Od ergaard in th e third round . but Odergaard put Cody McC la in' s Suzuki on the trai ler and returned to face Sulli van aga in . Th e rid ers bl asted up the hill neck and neck, but Sull ivan lost contro l over the top jum p and flew into Odergaa rd's lane, m issing the fly ing Buell by inches. Still , Od ergaard need ed anoth er win for th e class ti tle. Thi s tim e, however, Sulli van took the win and the cla ss title . Th e 600cc rid ers, Wood a nd J elin ek , lined up o p po sit e eac h oth er for th e fourth time. Wood took the win and adva nced to face O 'Co nnor. Sulli van faced off aga inst Od ergaard for the fourth time, with Sulli van advancing to face Northrup. In the semifinal, Wood bested O 'Con nor to move on to th e finals.
