Hall had eaten enough sand in the previou s m oto and quickly m ade his way around Bearden for the lead within the first few turns of the race. Bearden wasn't too th rilled abo ut bein g in the runner-up pos ition, and he pushed Hall bac k to second j us t befo re th e co m pletion of lap one. Hall kept Bearden within stri ki ng d ista nce for a couple of laps before a bobbl e on Hall 's part let Bearden get away for good . Bearden continued on uncon tested for a sweep of th e class. The battl e for second place went down to the last lap, with Aba yov holding off Hall to claim second overall. But every one knew that it was only a m att er of tim e before yo ung Good man would join the elite Fast Time gang , and that tim e came on July 1 at th e Pieasure Riders Hillclimb near Neoga, Indiana. At 38 , I 99 7 Du cati 90 0 rider Floyd Knig ht on nea rly qu alifies as an "old guy," and he won the Buell/V-T win cl ass. Ja ck Vigneau , 46 , finis hed seco nd in both the O pen cl ass (o n his 2000 Hond a 929) and in the 750cc cla ss (on his 1996 Suzuki GSXR). Derek Frazer from Whitehorse brought an old 1973 Yam aha TZ350 racer, and even though he couldn' t com pete, he planned to have it running properly by the next race. Mark Tak itani's 1997 Yamaha T Z2 5 0 tw o -strok e roa d raci ng bik e didn't fare well, as he crashed out on the first lap. His brother-in-law, Mark Harm on, did better on his two-strok e Honda RS25 0 road racer and finished secon d to Co m bs. After the tw o -strok e smo ke cleared, all the four -stro ke bi kes followed in the larger -displacem ent classes. On ly one you ng pup m an aged to sneak in th ere. Aa ro n Rueger wo n the 7 50cc cl ass on his 2000 GSX-R750 and set th e fastest ti me fo r the t wo -l ap , ap proxim ate ly 7 -m ile ti m etria l race. Rueger holds the num ber-one plate fro m 1999 and started the season well by setti ng the pa ce for the rest of the racers.
