Hall had eaten enough sand in the previou s m oto and quickly m ade his way around Bearden for the lead within the first few turns of the race. Bearden wasn't too th rilled abo ut bein g in the runner-up pos ition, and he pushed Hall bac k to second j us t befo re th e co m pletion of lap one. Hall kept Bearden within stri ki ng d ista nce for a couple of laps before a bobbl e on Hall 's part let Bearden get away for good . Bearden continued on uncon tested for a sweep of th e class. The battl e for second place went down to the last lap, with Aba yov holding off Hall to claim second overall. A steady rain the previous nig ht had pr omo t er Geo rge Si ngler i m p ro vising w i t h a rerouted tra ck that was long and fast, and that kept the co m petition cl ose. T oll iver was on the gas all day, using good starti ng techniq ues to his advantage th rough out hi s six motos o f raci ng . Scott Da rli ng and A ngelo Baila chin o provided the stiffest co m petition for Tolliver in the 125 cc ranks, while Todd Sinclair put up a goo d fig ht in the 250cc class . In the 12 5cc Nov ice cl ass, Ballach ino took the second spot, wi th Darli ng thi rd , followed by Si nclair and J osh K ompa. He has been flirting with th e Fast Tim e award now for over two years , and he has been fru str ated m any times - often carryi ng the fast tim e deep into the second round of riding only to see it beaten in the 750c c, Ope n or Pushrod classes (and usually by one of the Schultz broth ers). But every one knew that it was only a m att er of tim e before yo ung Good man would join the elite Fast Time gang , and that tim e came on July 1 at th e Pieasure Riders Hillclimb near Neoga, Indiana. Th e old er road raee rs ( t hose ove r 40 ) wo n th ree o ut of five classes : T he win ner of the O pen (750cc and up ) cl ass was 47 -year -o ld Wayne Carter , on his 19 9 9 Ya ma ha R l ; th e 6 00cc class was dominated by 44- year -o ld Charlie Hoit, on his Yama ha R6 ; a nd 48 -year -o l d Sa m Co m b s sm ok ed the other rac ers - li tera lly - w ith his ancient 1984 two -stro ke Yam aha RZ350 in the 500cc -a nd -below clas s. At 38 , I 99 7 Du cati 90 0 rider Floyd Knig ht on nea rly qu alifies as an "old guy," and he won the Buell/V-T win cl ass. Ja ck Vigneau , 46 , finis hed seco nd in both the O pen cl ass (o n his 2000 Hond a 929) and in the 750cc cla ss (on his 1996 Suzuki GSXR). Derek Frazer from Whitehorse brought an old 1973 Yam aha TZ350 racer, and even though he couldn' t com pete, he planned to have it running properly by the next race. Mark Tak itani's 1997 Yamaha T Z2 5 0 tw o -strok e roa d raci ng bik e didn't fare well, as he crashed out on the first lap. His brother-in-law, Mark Harm on, did better on his two-strok e Honda RS25 0 road racer and finished secon d to Co m bs. After the tw o -strok e smo ke cleared, all the four -stro ke bi kes followed in the larger -displacem ent classes. On ly one you ng pup m an aged to sneak in th ere. Aa ro n Rueger wo n the 7 50cc cl ass on his 2000 GSX-R750 and set th e fastest ti me fo r the t wo -l ap , ap proxim ate ly 7 -m ile ti m etria l race. Rueger holds the num ber-one plate fro m 1999 and started the season well by setti ng the pa ce for the rest of the racers. Fo rt unately , t here were on ly tw o crashes a nd n o o ne w a s se riou sl y inj u re d . Th is is always a plus, co nsidering the surface th at th e ra c er s u se wa s p roba b ly l a st p a v ed af te r W o rld W a r II. Road racers from all over Alaska have been gatherlng at Tanacross, near Tok, for the last 14 years to race and to enjoy the spo rt of rnotorcycle road raci ng . Th e Road raci ng A ssociation of Al aska (TRAAK) was forme d almos t two years ago, and has been work ing on establishi ng the first road race course in A laska , in the Mat-Su Valley .
