Mann held a slim lead to th e checkers for th e m ota vi ctory and the ov era ll win , w ith Mellgren secon d and Ev ans and T ak am o to third and fo urth. Th e A mateur 80cc GP rock eteers put on a roaring good show as well. In ra ce on e , Ed Simon laun ched to an early lead , with St eve Shimabuku and Larry Weisberg in hot pursuit, By lap four, Shimabuku ha d ta ke n th e lead from Simon while be ing pr essed big -time by W ei sb erg . On la p seven , Weis berg tried to ta ke Shim abuku under very hard braking int o the infam o us tum four , but he couldn't m ak e it hap pen . On lap eight, Weisberg again failed to m ak e the turn - fou r pa ss w ork , p r e s se d Shimabuku hard into tum five , clipped his rea r tire and wen t dow n. Shi mabuku rod e on to an eas y v ic to ry, with Simon in second . A ft er quick ly remounti ng , Weisberg took thi rd . In the aft erno on race , Shimabuku took the ea rly lead , with Sim o n in second and Weisberg wi thin strik ing di sta nce. By lap thr ee, the tab les had tum ed, with Sim on taking the lead and Shimabuk u falling back. For th e next five lap s, Wei sberg stalked th e lead ing duo, pulling up on the m in ch by in ch un der brak ing , O n lap ni ne, i n a fl ur ry of b ra ki ng m ov es and pa sses through tu rn s fou r a nd fi ve and th e sho rt chute following , Weisb erg moved pa st Shimabuku and th en Si mon as w ell.
