The first start was red-flagged whe n Votaw sli pp ed off t h e shelf on whic h the swinger rides a nd didn't let go . Mcintyre was totall y unawa re that he was drag ging Votaw like a rag doll until they got b u m p e d in thre e a nd no on e co u ld mov e . It looked like a movie stunt. Th ey lined up a ga in, a nd this tim e Mat he rs on a nd E iland c ut th e be st ga te a nd took th e le ad . The battle wa s for sec ond , a nd it wa s a case of surviv al of th e fitt e st. The BSA riders almost all sported red BSA jers e ys . Whe n t he g a t e dro p p e d , the sound wa s unlike the a ng ry ye llow j a c ke t noises we assoc iate wit h O c atc h him - not th a t they don 't try. In the first 500cc/O pen moto, Intermediate ride r Dean Hutc h inson stuc k his wheel in on seve ra l occasions in the first two laps , but Tucker began to pull away decisively as th e race went o n. In th e second m oto , Marc Cornut a nd Paul Havi r we re both pr essing to ca tc h Tu c ke r, a nd th ey we re m aking some progre ss during the m iddle laps . Tuc ker 's lead was slowly d im inish ing with a la p and a ha lf to go . But perh aps b oth Cornut and Havi r were pressing too hard. Going into a deeply rutted c or ks c rew just before a sandy and-infield series is for knobby-shod motocross bikes. The ACR runs classes for Pre-1975, Evolution and Modem machines. For those who spend their raci n g time o ut on the w ide -open motocross track, the close circuit of the dirt oval is a different experience. S lid ing the c orne rs and rid ing the in fie ld tw ists an d jumps und er the lights is just a s much fun as it looks . The starters and tra c k wo rkers at J olly Roger run the s ho w with preci s ion. In the Pre - 19 75 Ope n class, Ron Bertrand look ed like he knew wha t he wa s doing. His spotless Bultaco a nd lea thers gave the im pression tha t he had don e this before. The race res ults proved th is was true , a s Bertrand finished first in both heats. Rick Ross iter was a ble to stay close in both ra ce s, but Bertrand ha d the edge on the oval secti o ns, and though Ro ss ite r could ma ke up ground in the infield, he could not catch the Bultaco in th e eight laps run . J unior rider Scott Daros has finally got h is Can -Am runn ing righ t. After several previous frustrating ou tings of pushing the bike back to the pits, he cru ise d the TT track, finishing a close se cond to Alan Zac krone 's Can-Am in the Pre -1975 Open Novice co ntest. The vintage bikes looked right at home on this lo ng ve n ue . Wha t more c ould one ask for from Vintag e motocross? It was a typica l start to an ACR Classic 500cc m oto .
