Th e rain was a factor, as sprink les through ou t the even t even caused a mid -final break due to the slic k co nd itio ns. Wood was first off th e line in th e S ports man final. w ith Bill St ill well , Jim Ow ens and Joh n Wi nsett J r. clos e behind . Winsett put the big Harley into second as th ey came off th e fourth tu rn on the opening lap, but he co uldn 't use th e power ~ g ai nst Wood' s qu ick er , m or e agi le Honda . In the 250cc A final , Wood go t in front of Chris Klin efelt er and Ric h Mell inger. Th e frontrunn ing tr io stayed clo se during th e early laps. Griffin took th e lead at the start of the seco nd lap , and the tw o tra ded the lead at var io us spots on th e track until Wherley took the lead for good tw o lap s fro m the end . "Griff" came bac k later and won the 600cc B class, over Bill Boram, T om Nort on and Travis Sennett. Griff held the lead from flag to flag. Th e you nger rid ers had se v eral d ouble win ners, led by J esse Long in th e 5 0cc (7 -8 ) and 65c c cl asses. John Lewis , as usua l, won th e 85 cc (7 . 11) class, and he al so took th e XR100 cl ass. Sennett bea t Ben Gli sson in the 125 cc B class and fi n ished in t he m id dl e of t he 600cc B co ntes t as the on l y 2 50cc B entrant. Bur g ard im me diately pi cked up his pace and finished a minut e and a ha lf ahead of Burghardt at the chec ke rs. Rid ing buddies Brow ner and Harper, both from the Wichi ta area, fi ni shed third and fou rth overall , seve n m inutes bac k . "I wa s cru ising in th ird , ju st try in g to get th rough the rac e," said Harper, who hold s th e num ber -o ne plate . "Th e heat has always bo th ered me . and at one poi nt I had tu nnel vision . I was stoppi ng every lap to get water on my j er sey . J im caug ht and passed m e on th e fina l lap.
