With abundant traction throughout, a m ix of M ichigan loam and sand, rid ers were wishing for fresh, new kn obbies so th ey co uld di g deep in to the dirt. A total of 43 hare scr am bles entrants lined up fo r th e one -hour race, and th ey were sent off cla ss by cl ass at 3D-second intervals. The Sportsma n Intermediate c o n ti n gen t wa s by far the largest cla ss, with 17 entr ies, and rid ers had to com plet e eight hard and fast laps in order to hav e a cha nce of fini shin g in trophy c ontention. When the pack sorted itself out afte r tw o co rner s, Ji m Hud son . a boa rd a Ya m aha , h a d ta ke n th e lead, ahea d of Dani el and J im Myer son . Hudson began t o in ch away fr o m th e pack, a nd D a ni el be ga n to leave M yerson alo ne in third. As th e lead duo took off, Myer son was cau ght from beh ind by Stev e Mc Kel· lar, who th en dogged Myerson fo r a little ov er tw o lap s bef ore shooting into the th ird position on the nex t·to-Iast Lap . A t the fi nis h, Hudson was the w inner, D an iel was a close second, and McKe llar fought off My erso n for third. Ju st as in th e first mota , Hudson m an aged to grab the lead of the pack right from th e getgo , and he looked likely to have the overall in th e bag , but Daniel was no t go ing to give up on th e first lap. Daniel was soon glued to Hud· son 's back t ir e, and the tw o battled for the lead and th e overall. Meanwhile, thi rd pla c e was up for gra bs . M yerson was th ird for th e first tw o laps , but he went down and lost four positions. Th e heir to th e th ird positi on was David Abelsen, and he held it for on e lap befor e Honda pil ot Ke n Smith took over th e positi on fo r good o n the fo urt h lap. Back at the fro nt, Dan iel put a charge on Hudson on the fourth lap , taki ng t he lead and su bse· quen tly the m oto wi n, the overall for the day , and the cham pions hip for th e seaso n.
