A nother rider mov ing forward was Z Racing/Wind/Dirt Bik e rider Mark Till ey . who had pushed his KTM SX250 up to fourth after a poor start. Out front. Dubach was pu tting on a cl in ic , conti nuing to str etch his lead at the rate of on e second per lap . Kady was in firm co ntrol of second , whil e Musgrave (just back from a serious ga rdeni ng accident ) and Till ey began to argue over th ird. At the halfway point. Tilley m ade his m ove and passed Mu sgrav e fo r th ird. As the race wound down , Dub ach continued to ride m i sta k e -free, and when the c hec ke r s came out , he won by m or e than 15 seco nds. Kady loped in all alone fo r second. and Tilley rod e ac ross the lin e fo r thi rd. Mu sgrave was fourth, and Kelle n filled out the top five. At th e sta rt of m oto two , Tilley ag gressiv ely charged the firs t co me r and took the hol esho L Du bach jocke ye d into sec o nd , wh il e K ell en held third. Mu sgrave rod e in fo urth. and Kady was fifth . Dubach waite d exactly th ree comers before stuffi ng his way past Tilley for the lead . Kad y fou nd a way around Musgrave for third pl ace. Ti lley bega n to ex perience pr oblem s w ith his rear brake and he dropped off th e pa ce . Th is allowed Kady to move up to seco nd. and Musg rave to th ird . Dubach ch arged steadily all the way to the chec kered flag and too k the mo to w in in co nvinc ing fa sh io n. K ady was again second best , whil e Mu sgrave finished in th ird . Kellen rode in fo urt h . and Tilley limped in fifth . On t he d ay . t h e to p cas h we nt to D ub ac h by virtue of hi s 1-1 m oto sweep. Kady was next best w ith his 2-2 tall y. whi le Mu sgrave eame d third -place hon ors with his 4 -3 rides. "Yeah. right: It was a littl e hard to believe, since most of Iowa had been under a downpour, with areas a little as 45 m iles away receiving as much as 8 inches of rain the day before. As ~ was pouring only 20 m iles in Des Moines most of Saturday. the MX Kingdom crew spent the day watering and pr eppin g th e tr ack . It only rai ned du ring interm ission, which saved the crew a lot of work. A new sectio n wa s add ed co nsisting of two j um p -fill ed straights w ith a new off-cam ber tum before th e spe ctator tr iple. Thi s section slowed things down a bit and m ade for som e exciti ng raci ng. O ne of th e m o st thrilli ng classes of the eve ning was defi nite ly the 50 cc J unio r/Senior co ntest, With 26 rid ers between 4 and 9 years old on the lin e, anything can happe n - and a lot did . Th e wi de range of sk ill leve ls m ade for several good races within the race. In the 50<:c Senio r cl ass, Devin Reed pu t on quite a show and eve n d id a co uple of th e doub les. In the 50 cc Junior class , winner Bob by Hanson and runn er-up J ak e Whaley were way out front and cc even bested some of the SO Senior racers. ot Ano ther class that provided a J of action was the Ov er 30 A and B/ C co m bined co ntest. Th e heat race was lik e O ld Hom e Week. as riders who were at MX Ki ngdom's first race back in 1991 were out in force - includi ng m oto win ner Tracy Bach m an and othe r o ld fav orites such as David Brommel and Mark. Bolton. Off th e line . Bachman and Brommel m ade it cle ar that each wan ted to win , as they were nev er m ore than two seconds ap art. Chris Hunter and Gr eg Wurster were next in lin e, go ing bar to bar seve ral ti mes. follow ed by Patri ck Masonbrink and Bo lton . In th e m ain , th e A class was all Brommel and Hunter, whil e the B/ C cl ass was dominated by Craig Fla ch and Lee Botten. A little fur th er bac k . Pat Ni ck el and Steve Choplin had a tight battle goi ng . The crowd fill ed t he sta nds and li ned th e fences as the 250cc C m ain got under way . It was th e la rgest class of the evening; as 30 riders went do wn the sta rt stra igh t, th ree midpack sta rte rs go t hoo k ed togeth er and fell at the end of th e san d strai g ht .
