He d id likew ise on a Hon da in th e 125cc A class as wel l. G i bso n b at t l e d w i th YZ p il o t Travis Hartsh orn in bot h th e 250cc A and 125cc A classes. In t he " Heavy weig hts ," Hartshorn jumped out fron t and kept the po int fo r most of th e m o to . Gibson stayed close but really didn't sta rt to make his m ove until the lead duo began to enc ounter lapped traffic. In the closing la ps, Gibson found the fastest lines past the la pper s, and o n the fin a l lap, just three turns from th e fin ish , Gibson snatch ed the lead and the m ota vic tory. In t he second m ota . Gibson t o o k th e holesho t and led to the fi nish, hitting the rev li miter on several occasio ns en ro ute to the victory, thou gh Hartshorn m ade quite a race of it, reeling in Gibso n near th e end of th e m ota and almost sneaking by rig ht at t he finis h line. In 125cc A ac tion, Ha r ts ho rn, o n his YZ 12 5 , again took the hol eshot i n th e first mota, with Gibso n' s C R1 25 in tow. Gib son m o v ed b y Ha r t sh orn o n th e second la p , pu tting a surpris ing pass on the YZ pil ot by j um p ing to the insi de of the tab letop and grabbing the inside line through the infield section o f tra ck . Fr o m th ere, Gibson hel d th e lead , uncha llenged, for th e rem ai nder of th e moto . In the second m ot a , Gibson cam e away with the ho leshot. Harts horn stayed close the ent ire m ota but never go t cl ose enough to m ak e a m ove. Gib so n took the o ve ra ll w ith the two -mota swee p. In Over 4 0 racin g action , YZ250 -m ounted Mark Math eis and CR250 p ilot Chuc k Hetrick scoote d out in fr ont o f the pa ck and hel d a m oto -Ion g due l. Hetri ck took th e ea rly lead. Ma thei s look ed strong as he roll owed Hetr ick cl osely ; they were never m o re than a wheel ap art , but Hetrick held on for th e win . Th e seco nd mo ta was the sam e scenario but thi s tim e, it wa s Matheis who contro lled the lead fro m the beg inning and, after a mota-long battl e with Hetric k , ca me aw ay w ith th e win . Matheis too k the overa ll by vi rtue of his 2 -1 fin ishes. CR250 rider Russell Powers placed third. Hetric k too k co nt rol at the begin ning of both Ove r 30 m otos and hel d o n fo r the twomota sweep. Matheis suffered a fi rst-corner m ishap that kept him bur ied in the pack in the fi rst m ota : he eve ntually fi nis hed fifth. In the seco nd m ota , Matheis was his usual form, up front fro m the start and cha lle ng ing Hetrick the whole way. YZ250 rider Jeff Wood pu t in two great rides, fini shi ng th ird in both motos for seco nd overa ll an d fi rst Ove r 30 B rider. CR125 rider Roland Lo hr also rode well , fi nishing th ird overall and second Ove r 30 B rider. Woods stayed close to Cha se for a lap befor e a m iscue put him down in the sand and at the back of the pack. Chase co ntinued on to co llect the win, ahead of Assaf Al ush . Woods ma naged to fig ht his way up to a distant third -pla ce fin ish , over Ami Azoulay and Esau Ordenes. Alush got the jump on the field com ing out of the gate in mota two and ran out front for three laps before Woods finally fo und a way arou nd him . Chase pushed A lush back to third on the follow ing cir cuit and set out after Woods . Chase reeled in Woods for a close second- place fin ish, which was all he needed for the ove rall win. Alus h was an equal ly close third at the finish for third overall, behind the 3-1 of Woods . Honda- mounte d A ndy Tr abert led the first Junio r Vet B eginne r m ota fo r a la p before rel i nq u ish in g th e t op spo t t o Wo od s. Rick Snavel y m oved up into second pl ace by lap thr ee and stuc k with Wood s for a wh ile before Wood s upped the pace and checke d out with the win . Steve Pierce cam e up throu gh the field for a close third-place fin ish behi nd Snavely . Bei ng the la st race on the even ing 's program , and w it h a li tt l e ex t ra t i m e o n th e schedule, the second J unior Vet Novice m ota wa s ex te nde d to 20 laps. Th is lo nger m ota seem ed to suit Woo ds just fine , as he led the enti re 20 -l ap aff a ir. Snavel y kept Wood s in sig ht fo r the first 10 laps berore dropping of[ the pace. Pierce too k ove r th e runner-up position at th is po int , but there was no ca tc hing Woods t his tim e o ut. The 3-2 tally of Pierce earned him seco nd ove rall , topping the 2 -3 or Sna vely and the 5 -4 of Daniel Garb . T he raci ng broth ers al most complete d a sweep of all their m otos on the day. O lde r broth er Cory won all four o f his 125cc B and School boy races , while Kyle jammed to th ree ou t of fou r mo ta wins in the 65cc and Mini J unior classes. The spoiler was you ng ' n' fas t kid Cadi Ada ms, who incessantl y pestered Kyle Smith in both Mini-class motos . These two fast young men often wage battle on Distr ict II 's motoc ross tracks, tho ugh th is day belonged to Sm ith . Adams wo n the fi rst 65 cc -c1ass moto on his KTM. Smith charged back and po sted vi ctorious 2 -1 finishes , also aboa rd a KTM SX65. Ada ms also finished second behind Smith in the 85cc Mini J unior class, sail ing to a 2-2 sco re behi nd Sm ith 's win s. "T he boys d id good," beamed Ni ck Smi th , sum mi ng up hi s sons ' perf ormances. F& S Suzuki stars Tomm y "Too Coo l" Co llier and Ch uck "Farm boy" Reed tr aded wins in the Pro cl asses. Reed took the ove rall and the money in the 125 s, and Co llie r tas ted vi ct ory in the 250s. the Sports m an 250cc and 600cc class es, wit h We iss takin g a pa ir of cl o se seco nds. Weis s took a no t he r second in the Senior Ov er 50 co ntes t , th is t ime be hi nd Mike Keane. Brian Eck hart won th e Vete ran Ov er 3 5 cl ass, and Nick Taylor ran the m ost laps ror the Sports ma n 750cc w in . T he ' 7 0 s Si ngles a nd 250cc Sports ma n classes were grouped toge ther. Bow er put his Bower Tr u c k in g / C y cl e T ech /Zech ma n 's Cy cle/J&L Racing Yamaha in fron t of Wei ss, 250cc rider Ja mes Way , John Riveiro, Bill Viney and Metro Raci ng ' s Do n Miller. Bo wer a nd Weiss quickly put some distan ce on the rest of the field as they battled wheel to wheel for the lead the entire distance. The others kept abou t the same distance from ea ch other, except Viney and Miller; Miller's 25 0cc Bultaco would gain ground in th e turns, but it di dn 't have enough grunt to get by Viney's 500cc Yamaha. The Senior Ov er 50 co ntest wa s a case of sur viv al of the fittest - wi th th e fittest be ing very close up fro nt. Keane took the holeshot (as he had in the heat ) , tak ing the lead fro m Weiss . Veteran Over 35 rider Eckhart nursed his T riu mph fo r three laps before retiring . Only t wo rid ers remained , but th ey ran the enti re dista nce nose to ta il. Kea ne prevailed. N i ck T a y l or too k t h e Spo r ts m a n 750cc/S po rts ma n 600cc lead , over Wa y and Eckhart . On the seco nd la p, Eckhart dropped out. and T ayl or took a rare DNF two lap s later, lett ing Way circu late the ci rcuit for the win. Re sul ts 65 : 1. Kyle Sm ith (KTM ); 2.
