Tra il boss Meylan Tho re se n selected some of the toughest trails in the Jordan Creek O HV area for this seventh annual Coast Range 100 . The first 20-mi le loop was extended by eight miles to "warm up " th e riders and spread the field out. After a scary-fast gravel-road sta rt, the first of many uphill battles b e g a n on Roger's Ro a d, a 3 - mile jeep road that makes riders' arms pump so bad th at Popeye wou ld be jea lous . Nex t c a m e the legendary Maddog's Pumpkin Pa tc h . Named for t he p umpkin -s ized bo uld e rs hidden in the gras s just in c h e s away from yo ur unwa ry toes, this tra il claimed m a ny a victim in the Amateur ran ks and prod uced qui te a few disconcert in g exclamations from th e s e crest fall en he roes . Southeastern Regional Championship Series Round 1: Carolina Motorsports P ark Formula Two -St roke, Vintage Four and Vintage Two took to the tra c k for race three of the Vintage progra m . Formula Two -Stroke rider Mark Morrow and Vintag e Four's Michael Eilan d commanded both the ir classes for most of the r a c e . Morrow staye d ahead of the Streits Yamaha of Eila nd by about five lengths all the way to the end . Vintage Four contender Mark Nadelkov, on the WKR Yamaha , was quietly reel ing in the front duo but ran out of laps , as did Stau ber. The two settled for s ec ond and th ir d . Rick G uirey finish ed s econd in Form ula Two-St roke , with Nathan McMa n us third . Harsh took his second win of the day in Vintag e Two , ov er BSA ride r Ruthe rford and Honda pilot Smith. Harold Pa g e J r. , t urni ng some of the fastest laps of the day on h is Bar nacle Bill's Leather's Yama ha , easily won the Vintage Five contest over Ed Schara harst and Wa yne Shelton , both also on Yamahas . Vintage Three ( wh ic h was run with Vintage Five) was a repeat of the Vintage Four race , with Eiland and Nadelkov in first and second. Gruhn got close at the end , th ough , as he o utbra ked and passed Nadelko v with three turns to go . Nadelkov "wo ke up " and fough t Gruhn back to ta ke s econd . Sunda y's Vintage S ix win went to Ya m a h a 1000 p ilot Peter Kissinger, with Will iam Ma yfield, also on a Yamaha 1000 , in second, and Dale Burroughs, riding a Suzuki 110 0 , in third . Harsh , who was also the Sportsman 350 winner at Daytona in Mar ch , is closing the gap on po int s leader Chris Mars hall from Ba lt im ore . Ha rs h was runner -up to Ma rsha ll in la s t year's c ha m p io n s h ip .
