Aft er the final checkered flag was furl ed at Muddy Cr eek Raceway, si te of the Sou theast Regional Loretta Ly nn 's Yo uth Qual i· f ie r we ek end , seven ra c er s in each class were ab le to go hom e and turn their energies to preparing for the first week in August. Team Green 's Jam es Stewart J r. was on e of those who qualified eas il y . " Bubba" nail ed t h r ee cla sse s - th e 85c c (14-15) M odifi ed , Sup ermini , a nd Sch o o lbo y Modified cla sses w it h three perfect m ot os in each and b are l y brok e a sweat. Co nsistency paid off for Donny McGourty , Sh ane Lusk and Gen e Stull , who had ru nnerup fi nishe s in t hose classes, respec t ive ly , b u t S t e w art ' s fluid, ta k e c ha rge riding (and lap times i n the 1:5 5 range) put him out of reach. Ch amp io n Cyc les' Zach O sbo rne aced five of hi s six mo tos t o t a k e wins in bo th the 65cc (7 - 1 1) Modified a n d 6 5 c c (1 0-11) St o c k classes . Coming up the hill off t he start of his th ird 6 5 cc ( 7-11) M od i fi ed m o t o , Osborne had th e inside lin e going into turn one , bu t hi s KTM got pu shed a litt le furt her insi de t han he'd planned right int o the deep est ru t left b y t he bigger bikes - and down he went. Th e entire field, sav e for a few , bla sted past as Osborne struggled to free his bike. F in all y re mounting and rejoining the race , O sb orne lit t he af terburner o n the littl e KTM. He was on a mission to regain a fro nt positi on, an d he t oo k every unex p ec t ed li ne t o pass bu n ch es of th e b e st r id ers i n th e South east. T h e sav vy you ng racer isn't afr aid of airtime, but he k ept his C j ump trajectories flat for m ore sp eed , a~d it fina lly paid off in a thi rd -p lac e finish . Osborne had to finish at least t hird in o rd er to sa lvage t he o ve r all vi ctory . A fourth or wo rse wou ld ha v e o pened the door for Austin Stroupe of Lincolnton , North Carolina , • sitting in second wi th five points, t o snag th e c lass w i n. As t h i n g s turned o u t , Stroupe fe ll and finish ed eighth, tak ing the pressure o ff O sborne . After that, it became a matter of go ing fo r th e win , on the pr inciple of th e thing . Fl orida 's David Millsap s turn ed in th e second m ost im pressive co me back ride of the da y in the 85 cc (9 · 13) Modif ied co n te st, w ith m an y pa rallels to Os borne's si t ua tio n . Like Osbo rne, Millsaps had buttoned up the first two m otos. Mill saps also fell on th e first lap of the thi rd moto, though David 's " uh oh" cam e in the woods secti on furth er along , leaving him even less time to ma ke up a lot of g round. And, lik e Os borne, th e worst Millsaps co uld finish to pull off the overall win was third. Finding himself su d d en l y in t he lead , Matt Goe rke of Lak e Hele n, Flori da , knew he had to ride hard to stay in front of 8 5cc (12- 13) Stock winner Bry an J ohn son Jr., anot he r F l orida boy. J ohn son ha d won all t hree of his other motos , and he wa nted this wi n almost as badly as his father, emotionally ex ho rt ing hi s rid er fro m trackside. Goerke defl ected all at t ack s, and th e two Gator racers stret ch ed ou t a sizable lead on ye t an other Fl orida boy , K yl e Chishol m , and Chad Wag es of Fr ederick, Maryland. Millsaps worked hard to get ba c k into the top f ive, a nd b e fore t he halfw ay poi nt he had bl ast ed back into fo urth , where he stayed fo r th ree m ore lo ng laps, figur ing out a way to fin esse Ch ishol m . F inally , riding defen sively caused Chis holm to leav e j ust a bi t too much of an opening co ming th ro ugh one of the last turns, and th at was all Mil lsaps need ed to supplant Chishol m in third and lock up th e overall win. Goerke won th e moto and Johnson was second, g iv ing th em exactly t he sa me t o t a l o f p o int s . Suzuki -m ounted Don Bisce gl ia , a 10-year vete ran of AMA Nationals, and local Pro N ev Lab o rde wen t head to head in the 250cc Pro class . Biscegli a held t he top -ranked Centra l Oregon rider at bay in both m ot os to net a I-I win. J: o :::; S o i'D 5 ~ s: Muddy Creek Raceway: lach Osborne (338)took a really inside line in tum one at the start of the third 65cc (7-11) Modified mota and almost disappeared in a monster rut. Osborne charged back through most of the pack to third from nearly dead last, locking up the overall win.
