Perh ap s trying to o hard , Na val ran off in the very fast sweeper com ing on to the straig htaway but managed to sa v e it , to th e d el ight of th e c rowd . Current Vintage Fou r champion M ic h ael Eil and, on th e Stre its M otorsports Yamaha , gra bbed th e holeshot , but Choice Rental Car Sa les' Frank Shockley , on a bea uti ful 750cc T riu mph , too k over t h e lead b y t urn th ree, wi th Campbe ll a cl ose thi rd . Just before completing lap three, Cam pb ell emulated Naval by exiting the track in tum nine at abo ut 120 mph! "Now I know what th em p eople are talk in g ab out wh en th ey sa y th at li fe fl a s h i n g - b e f ore - t h e i r - e y e s s t u ff, " Campbell said afterw ard . Me a nwhile , back a t t h e tr a c k , Shockl ey pulled away fro m Eil an d by as much as half a stra ig htaway on t he last la p . In t h e l ast t urn b ef o r e t he che ck ers, Shockl ey 's Triumph decided it only needed one rod , and it sp it t he ri ght one th rou gh th e cases. Shock ley ha d bui lt up su c h a lead over Eil and that, with only about a quarter-mi le of straightaway left to go , he was hoping hi s m omentum would carry him to the wi n. As Shoc kley was coasting to ward t he fi nish line, Ei land closed in. T he spectators at th e fini sh w ere yelling and s c ream i ng; i t wa s go ing t o b e close .
