[jf}rJ@[?~ WDDD~ @rJ@D@ [l]@w~ [ffJ[?CfJ~~ [ffJ[?CfJDDD !iJWCfJ[?@ Carter Myers of Breck enridge, Michigan, became the second ap plica nt - and the first dirt-tracker ever - to win th e Cycl e New s Brass B rain Award. th e presentation coming at the conclus ion of the AMA D irt Track Grand Cha mpionships in Indianapolis. In doing so. Myers j oins motocrosser Ben Evans as a Brass Brain rec ipient . The Brass Brain Award was cr eated to recognize the hard work and dedication of amateur racers both on and off the race track by factoring in their results at the track along with their efforts in the classroom. Myers earned the accolade by virtue of his performance at the AMA D irt Track Grand Ch am pionships. wh ich included two Grand Cham pionship titles - in the 85cc Mod (9 - 13 ) and 85 cc DTX (9 -13) d iv isio ns - along with an outstanding performa nce in the classroom. Myers atte nds Breckenri dge Mi ddle Schoo l in his ho metown , wh ere he jus t co m p lete d th e sixth grade wi th a 3 .6 g rade point average. Th at effort, co m bined wit h his co nstant presence in not on ly the cl asses where he won championships , bu t also t he 125cc Mod class where he finished fifth overall, m ade him the fro ntrunner in a long li st of applicants . Myers appeared to be quite happy to hear his name called during th e final award ce remonies at Indy . "Th is is cool: Myers said . "I' m happy that I got it, and I think it's cool that I'm the first dirt-tracker to win iL I don't necessarily like school, but I have to do it, so I might as well try as hard in school as I do racing m otor cycl es." Myers' says th at his favorite subject is m ath . " It's m y best subj ect: Myers said. " It' s about the easiest subject for m e. We just finished th e year add in g, subtracting , dividing and mult ipl y in g fract ions. I did n't have too much troub le with th at ." Aside from raci ng, My ers is pretty much like yo ur average 12, yea r -old, enjoying a variety of activities , most of which involve speed. " I like to rollerblade, ride my XR100 and my pedal bike - stuff that k eeps me active: Myers said . "My cou sin Logan lives about a mile from me, and we alway s meet each othe r o n our bi kes and hav e ra ces. I also like to go lf." But m otorcycles co me first, and tha t 's th e avenue that Myers hopes to pursue as a profession som eday . " I'll probably always rid e motor cycl es, eve n if I quit racing : Myers said. But for now, ra cing is it, and Myers is t ryi ng to play the game like a pr o f ess iona l. Th at in cl u de s g iv ing a shout of tha nks to sponsors Myers Racing , Maxxis Tires, Progress ive Su spensio n , WD -40 , Mom £. Dad, Nagel Equipment Co., Myers Farm s, Edge Tec Electric, Bubba , Dave and Dakota, Bay Cycle, Fa SI Fo rward Raci ng , Pam and Fred Lan g , ITW Vin yl Graphics, K£. N F ilters , G randNa tiona IChamp ion. com, No F e a r , Saddleme n and J B Graph ics . "A lot o f sponsors want you to do well in school : Myers said . "So this will look good on my resume." In this co mputer ag e, it also includes hav ing his own Web site , www.dirttrackpro.com/CMyers27 . ' We 're real proud of him: says Bridgilt Myers, Cart er's mother. " He works really hard in school. We stay on him pretty good about keeping his grades up , but he 's pretty good in school , and he 's not a troublemaker. I think that the Brass Brai n is a good ide a beca use education is rea lly important. In school sports, kids have to keep their grades up to ma intain eligibility. We don't have th at in m otorcycle raci ng, but at least this aw ard recognizes th e kids who do have good grades in school." To say t hat th e Brass Brain Awa rd has had some impact on the M y er s fam il y is an un de rsta te men t, as another My ers, Carter ' s equa lly talente d yo u nger br other Travis, has ideas of sco ring his own Brass Br ain. "Travis ca me to m e the other day and said , 'Mo m, I wish I cou ld ge t a Brass Bra in ,''' Bridgitt Myers said . "' told him, 'Well T rav is, then you need to study harder." Who knows, maybe th e Myers boys could become th e first broth er act to win Ihe Brass Brain. cue I e nevvs J ULY 26 ,2000 45
