He won a total of six races and two championships during the weeklong Grand Champi onships, which featured racing on a short track and IT circuit in Lawrenceburg. Indiana, and a half mile in Indianapoli s. The final day of the championships was to be held on the Indiana State Fairgrounds Mile track , but heavy rains made that track too muddy to race on. McDerm itt is th e fifth ri der giv en th e award, which is designed to recogn ize young amateurs who are preparing to mov e into professional racing. McDermitt follows 1997 winner Nicky Hayden, Roger Lee Hayden (1998) and 1999 cowinners Tony Meiring and Bryan Smith. "It's great to win this award," said McDermitt at the presentation. "There were so many good raeers here this weekend, it's a real honor. I think that this will allow me to get some recognition so I have a better chance when I go pro." The Horizon Award is presented in each of three racing disciplines; dirt track , road racing and motocross. Several of the past winners, most notably Nicky Hayden (factory Honda Superbike rider) and Travis Pastrana (factory Suzuki Supercross and motocross rider), have gone on to suc cessful p ro racing c areers. McDermitt followed in his father's footsteps and began motocross racing at a very young age. He tried dirt track racing for the first tim e in 1995 and fell in love with the sport. "I really lik ed the speed and the dose racing on the dirt ovals," said McDermitt , who is going to be a sophomo re at Genesee High School in Michigan . "This half-mile track in Indy is one of my favorites." McDermitt will be eligible to tum pro next May when he turns 16 and said he plans to do so. "I have a iot, my family and some good friends that are behind me 100 percent. I know it' s a big step to move up to the pros, but I've really had some good compe tition in the amateur ranks that hopefully has prepared me." Larry Lawr ence cue I e n e uv S • JUL Y 26 .2000 43
