' Bartels' Harl ey -D avidson / Co rbin Racing 's J ay Springsteen posted a q uick 3-minute, 20.120·second tim e on the board en route to wi nning heat rac e number two , good enough for his secon d pol e in three starts o n the Formula USA/Wrench ead .co m ci rc uit. His speed secret ? Sh adow-box ing . "T ha t's th e fi rst th at I've h eard o f th at ," Sp ringer sai d a fter be i ng to ld th at h e had eamed the pole. "It was a gr eat heat race thoug h. I got a good hol esh ot , and I looked back and co uld see that th ey were be hind m e, bu t most of t he t im e I was j ust ou t there raci ng m y sha dow. I' d go into on e, and w hen l'd go int o o ne m y shadow co me around me, and it made m e think that they were right on my butt for th e whole rac e. I finally looked ba c k once coming out of tum two , and then I seen that ' had a big lead on 'em and t hought, 'O op s, m ust've bee n my sha dow! It was hangin' right with me, and I co uldn't shake it." Springsteen led t he eight-lap race from st art to finish , spurr ed on by a co nc entrated c h all en ge from Cozi ahr Ha rley-David son/Memphi s Shades ' Kevin Varn es, wh o is an ex cellent groove-track rider. While th e pair battled out front , T erry Poove y snu ck th rou gh the field abo ard hi s Iightning ·fast Rot ax, p assin g Johnny Murp hree o ff turn tw o and Mike Hacker up th e fro nt st raight to run th ird by lap four. M urphree finished fourth, taking t he last direct t ransfer spot . Just before Springer too k to t he tra c k , Ki n g had won th e ope ning heat race, j ust missin g o ut on the holeshot but qu ic k ly p assing D an St an ley on the front stra ight to snare the point as th ey st arte d lap two . Schnabel spun it up coming o ff of turn fo ur an d low-sided . Chris Carr laid it dow n to avoid runnin g over Sch na bel , but Carr 's bik e nailed Schn ab el squa re in the b ack , leaving th e u su all y tough yo unste r wr ithing on t he gr o un d in p ain , Both rider s made th e res tart, c h asin g Ch arli e Orr down t he bac k str aight wh en t he rac e resumed . Carr qu ic k ly c aught Orr, pa ssin g hi m as t hey hit turn three on lap six . Carr w ent on to win , while Orr held o ff Br ett Landes an d Joe K opp, with all three rid ers m oving up in th e pro gram. Two riders t ransferre d from eac h sem i, and the l8-rider field was co m pleted by an LCO. Hacker sm oked to an im pressive win ov er Schnabel in th e fir st sem i, whil e J ason Tyer survived a restart to outrun Gr eg T ysor in th e seco nd semi. Th e l8-rid er LCO wa s a broth er act of sorts, as inlaws Willie M cCoy and M ike Varnes ran away from the rest of th e fi eld to finish on e- two at the line for starting spo ts on th e back row . not lik e Ric h has n' t be en run ning goo d , it wa s just a ma tt er o f g ett ing him to t he co rn er first , " W ern er said . " He was going fast . It 's just th e vagari es o f rac in g. It was our tum ton ight. " PACE M otor Sport s Vice President Roy J anson was on hand at O klahoma City. as was C EO G ary Becker. W ith the close racing before a nearly full grandstand. the pair was able to sigh a collective sigh of relief . as it appears as though their series is starting to hit on all cylinders. " It went real well tonight. and we 're really pleased w ith it ." Janson said. " It was a real tough day. It wa s ove r 100 deg ree s, and t o try t o ge t enou gh w ater in the rac etrack so that w e could ke ep it to where there was no dust was a real challenge. Our trac k guy s did a great job. and it co uldn't have been a mo re exciting race than it was." That leaves Oklahom a City as t he new be nc hm ark fo r the rest of the W renchead .c om events. " It is. " J anson said . "We we re a litt le disap pointed w ith the first two· we didn 't co me out of the blocks as good as we had hoped. but we 've made up so me ground w ith this one." Smit h's daring was notable in the Last Chance Qualifier. as he ve ntured high off the groove in his attem pts to pass other riders. It look ed spec tac ular. but didn't payoff. Of co urse. his results were much better in the Pro Singles class. N ot bad for a rider who was basically still an amateur two weeks ago. " Hey. I'd have turned Pro when I was 12 if they wo uld have let me." Smit h said. The Pro Singles main event feat ured a close battle . but perhaps the most popular sec ond-division race of the night occu rred in third heat race . where Texas rider Jennife r Snyder had the crowd roaring as she battled fo r a transfer spot we ll be hind runaway leader K enn y Noye s . Snyder duked it out w ith Brandon Cartwright fo r the fourth spot. losing the pos ition to the local rider as they entered turn one on the last lap. Snyde r then sent the crowd into a frenzy as she shot underneath Cartwright off of turn two to retake the spot. Snyd er wo uld go on to finish 12th in the Pro Singles feat ure. "That was fun tonight. " Sny der said . " I got a terrible start off the sec an d row . I was th e last o ne to the turn fro m th e sec ond row." Snyder has plans to con tinue rac - ing the Wrenc head.com National Dirt Track Ser ies. D espite making it into the ma in event st raight thro ugh the heat race on the most co lorf ul mach ine in the pits . TCR rider Brett L andes might have been the quietest racer on the track all night . Not one to make big splashes anyway. Landes finished third in heat three and then rolled to an even less obtrusive l Zth-place finish in the National. - I j ust didn't feel real co mfortable out there tonight.
