F inding tract ion on the h igh speed , sl ippery grass sections of the 12 .5 -m ile c ircu it, Bamford took the checkers with six m inutes to spare. Aft er s orting out th e p a c k in th e early laps, Steahly Off-Road/H ouse of Hors epower/IMS -spons o red t eam mat es De rek Steahl y and Jerem y Puma fought an epic , race -long battle for second and thi rd place overall , with Steahly edg ing out his be st friend/worst enemy , Puma . "I ha d a ha rd time staying a head of J er e m y to day," said KX250 -mo unted St e a hly. "I crashed o n the ' lO O-m ph' downhill and slid on the grass for 6 0 fee t but managed to catch up to h im later on the same lap ." - Puma , wh o took the holeshot and led the 250cc Expert class around the half-mile gra s s- tra c k on his KTM 250 , add ed , "Afte r De rek we nt down o n th e se cond lap , I had m y turn and s lid out on a sweep ing d irt ro a d lined with trees a bo ut 10 feet a pa rt. He got b y me th ere , and I dogged h im for the rest of the race but couldn 't get him ." With 12 0 ride rs in the contest , widely varied terrain and lots of pass ing opportunities , the rac ing was close in all classes. With the gen e rous co o pera tion of th e owners of th e ra nc h, ETRA was able to bu ild trails s pec ifica lly for this event . Th e ci rc uit tested the riders ' diver s ity by utilizing the large , grassy meadows, the tight woods and th e steep terra in. On race day, a light ra in fell th rough out th e entire eve nt, c reating ex tre mely s lipp ery conditions . Th e race began with a Le Man s -s t y le , dea d -engi ne F 40 J ULY 12, 2000 ' cue I e start. with the riders having t o ru n 50 fe et to th e ir bike s. The densely overgrown Bla c k Fore st to o k a few riders b y surpr is e , and many left a tra il of plas tic and bark, no t unlike Hans el a nd Gretel' s bread cru m bs . Up th e Meat Bonanza hillcl imb and down Da n ielle 's Drop a nd into Poison Oak Alley the riders went in th e drizzle , beaming with g le e . After four miles , th e tra il opened up to th e pit area , whe re rid ers co u ld twist the loud handl e o n th e gra ss strai g ht a way and spe ct ato rs co ul d wa tch the 70-mph action. Th en c a me t he "1 0 0 -m ph" d ownh ill, wh ich, t o m an y , wa s the highlight (or lowlight) of th e cours e . Im ag ine , if you will, sliding headfirst on your c hest prote c tor through wet, foot -tall gra ss. After the c hec k-out, riders slid the ir wa y down the Elk Tra il and meandered a round a few ridges to the Bunny Hill, a trail literally cu t through 15-foot -tall bushes. Then ca me the Powerlin e Hillclimb. What co uld have been a bottle neck turne d out to be merely a "difficu lty" to quite a few riders, as the club quickly rerouted the course to ac comm odate the "te c hn icall y c ha lle nged" riders (a .k.a. "s podes" ). Ba ck o n th e faste r p a rts of t he course , riders wer e a llowed to wick it up before heading back for another 30 - to 45-minut e la p . In fact, Goodby a ppe a red to be the man to bea t a mong th e 23ride r fie ld , and a t one time h e act ua lly h eld th e le a d in b oth motos before he went down . In the first moto , he remounted quickly to snag second behind Wea r, while in the second moto, his crash left him shaken and down for a while , nu rs ing a sore shoulder.
