"It' s alway s been dry -slick , so we've always had to slow down so mu ch : said winner Davi s. "Ton ight we were tuming 2 1-second laps , wher e last year we were tu m ing 24, second laps . Being abl e to char ge in deeper, you could see what th e track was really shaped like, I think that when we came here before, we never noti ced th at turns three and four are shaped so sharp . When you cut three seconds off yo ur lap tim es, you're picking up some speed som ewhere, We were ju st rolli ng around there. When yo u put some moisture in it , we can get some speed." "Th is track was just beaut iful: Mik e Hack er said. "The /\MA, Steve [Morehead) and th e IMDA did a great j ob; it's the best th is track' has ever been. Matter of fact, I think all the tra cks have been bett er all year." "The track was fun to ride ," offered Spri ngst een. "The last coup le of years we came here, you couldn' t even see. It was dusty , and it was so slippery you couldn't gas it off the corners . Today it was the sooner you could get the gas back on, the faster you were." "They did a great j ob with the race track, and we got the ni ght over in good tim e," said King . "You can't say any thing but good th ings about thi s race track com pared to what "'ill we' ve had." , "The track was racy , you could pass on it: Carr said. "' tip my hat to them; they did a lot bett er job that what we've had here in the past. "The track was awesom e - the best tr ack we've ridd en on, I think," said Coolbeth, Paul Morgan perhaps enjoyed th e track more than oth ers. Morgan not only set fast time in the .Grand National portion of the prog ram , but the SuperTracker side too" "The track was awesome : he said. "The first coup le of qualifying heats it was a littl e slick, but . it really came around by the time we went out. " Morgan's four-lap qualifying time was 1:28 .009, shattering Davis' 1999 record of 1:33.2 47 : Davis then came back and bested his own 25-lap m ark by 42 seconds 8;39.380 to 9:21.801. Much of the credit for this year's improved race tracks has gone to Steve Morehead, but in this case Mor ehead insists most of the credit should go to the IMDA's Rod Garrett. "I've worked with this ma n [Garrett) all week , and what a pl easure," Mor ehead said. "Whatever it took, they were there, and it show s. When you ca n put a tra ck out there lik e that, y ou can have a great show_I felt thi s track was one of the worst I ever rode, and Rod helped turn it into a great track - maybe one of the I 0 best ever." b ottom , m y tim es pi c ked up, and I go t r igh t bac k o n t h e pa ce , It was rea lly hard to pa ss; you reall y had to stuff it in there _ " eN Route 66 Racew ay Joliet, Illinois Results: May 20, 2000 [Round 5 of 171 HEAT 1 ( 10 laps; 1 1 rider s, to p thr ee transfer ) : 1. " We 're in the hunt for podium finishes in both the SuperTracker and 883 series, but the 750 deal. that's just a come and ride - we're not looking for a top 20 or anything.
