Known as "Yer Maun" by his legions of fans in his home country of Ireland as well as thousands who make the trek to the Isle of Man annually. no one met success in the TI like Dunlop. The soft- spoken Irishman won a record 26 Isle of Man TIs in a racing career that began in 1969. with 18 of those years spent as a Honda factory racer. Three of those TI victories came ju st a month a90 at the age of 48 - 23 years after his first victory on the Island. Some of those victories also came in 1985. despite the fact that the fishing boat taking him from Ireland to the Isle of Man sank. Dunlop was in the galley cooking when the boat started to sink and it was his quick thinkin g that helped ensure the safety of all those onboard. "It was nothing. j ust .the normal thing to do at the tim e: Dunlop said later of his heroism. A father of five. Dunlop has been honored by the British government with both MBE and aBE awards for his humanitarian work in war-tom countries. 8 ~QJ[ll)[bCB[?~------- 8 8 o o o 2 J ULY 12. 2000' cue I e n e vv s
