You know they have to be constructed of sand that's a lready wet, but not too wet . That's the general idea behind build ing a beach 'cross track. Dennis had a better dr ive going toward the infi eld ste p- up jum p and retook the lead from Cox. Ronnie Harp er carded fifth in the fi rst m oto , but problem s in the second mota wou ld ke ep hi m out of contenti on for a top fin ish. On t he final lap , Dennis ga ve it one last shot, goin g for it in the spectato r rockers, It loo ked lik e Dennis got by Ross, bu t th e last rocker took his m om entum awa y and Ross cam e ou t of th e rockers with the all- important lead , Ross cam e home with the win , with Dennis a close second . Trey Wilki nson won the 250cc A and Over 25 A con tests , The track co ndi tio ns didn't faze Wilkinson one bit as he performed aerobatics at the head of the field on both days . "I ride in the sand a lot," ex plained Wil kinson, "In th is dee p stuff, yo u have to j ust gun it and hold yo ur li ne . If yo u cha nge your m in d in t he mid dl e of a commi tment, the sand will grab you r fro nt wheel and yank you down," Ron Ross of Virginia Beach was another double winner, eam ing th e Ove r 25 C/ O and Unlimited C/O victor ies. Chris Murphy of Christi ansbur g, Virginia, snagged the holeshot on Saturday in th e Over 25 C/O cont est and led for a good ways. Loc k fo und an inside line in the tight left -h ander aft er the Classic T railers doubl es and made the pass , followed by Wood , Lock wa s rid ing like a man possessed - whi ch in the mu d can mea n tr ou b le . Lock went d ow n , gi vi n g t h e l e a d to Wood.. Lock remounted quickly and used the same reckless riding style to overtake Grant Wol f, Schoenith and Wood to cla im the win in m ot a o ne . Wood ro de hom e second, with Wol f, Schoe ni th and Ryan Boutell locking up the top five spots in the fi rst go -around . In moto two , Lock timed the gate expe rtl y to lead the pack aro und tum one , with pressure from Wood and Schoenith. Lock ke pt his Ka wasaki pinned and was bruta l to the clu tc h plates, but th is riding sty le was the ticket for opening u p a lea d o n h i s riva ls Woo d , Sch oen it h a nd Wolf. Wood slowly began to cl ose the gap on Lock, using a steady , smooth rid ing styl e, On lap thr ee, Wol f pa ssed Schoen ith in th e back of the co urse to take ove r third and th en set hi s sig hts o n Woo d, who was j ust a tu m ahead, On lap fo ur, Boutell was on th e gas , m ovin g fro m fifth to seco nd afte r tu rni ng in one of the fastest 80 cc C laps of the d ay. He wa s now pressu rin g Lock for th e lead . Th ird was Bo utell (5- 1), who looked faster eac h lap. Schoe nith (4 -4) and Wolf (3 -5) made up th e rest of the top five , "I really felt good out the re today," Wood said. "I like the mud, and I just rode smooth to make sure I d idn 't fall . I need to thank my mom and dad for making my racing possi ble; without the ir backing m e, I wouldn 't be racin g.
