As the enti re 18-rider field funneled cleanly over the new Texas Tunnel j um p. des igned to allow spectators safe access to the m id dle of the track for optimum Viewing . David Hutton jumped into the mix and du eled with Hertz ing whil e Stichter set his sights on Hiser. Stichter trailed the leader by only half a second before lay ing his Kawasak i down midmoto in th e tight S -tum section exiting t he lower area of the track , allowi ng Hiser a little breathing room . Her t zin g finally got arou nd Hutton ha lfway into th e second lap and held on for th ird. Derik Brewster held down fifth for th e m ajo rity of th e moto but wa s o ve rt aken by a h ard charging Dawson DeVries on th e last lap . Griego stretched out his lead by five seconds at the checkers over Murphy. Lu cero propelled his Cobra aro und turn one for the holeshot in m ota tw o. but he qu ic kl y found h imsel f und er attack from Griego and Murphy.
