Everyone seemed to enj oy th e effo rts of the 270 r id ers in three sep a r ate races , and Gary Hend ri cks fired up the t r a c k with a 250c c /Op en A Kawasaki flame . He c am e in o verall w ith a m inute l ead o n th e se cond pl ac e c o nte nde r, Dustin Gibson . " D usti n, La nce (Smith] and I were t he top th ree rid ers th e wh ol e rac e," H endr i c k s sai d . " We p u lle d a way from eve ryone else b y abou t 20 sec onds on th e first lap ." On t hat firs t lap , they swap ped back and fo rth unt il Gibson hit a tre e. Smith was in first pla ce and Hendricks in th ird wh en Gibson went down. " He hit that tree a n d c r a sh ed. " Hendr i cks s a i d . " I th ought he was hurt real bad , so I sto pped to check on him . He was fin e . so I took ba ck off and caught up to Lan c e." The Performan ce Cycle of Dalton/ IMS /MSR -backed Hendricks took the lead away from Smith when th e y came to a hill. Some lappers were having trouble a n d Hendricks grabb ed the better lin e whil e Smi th got stuck and lost time, all ow ing Gibson to take second pla ce overall. "We had fun ," Smith said . " and it was a good day to race , eve n though I had some trou ble. I was in the lead fo r the firs t two lap s until we ca me to this g narly section. Gar y took the left and I took the righ t. The righ t li ne tu med out to be th e wr on g one . beca use I ended R u p go ing ba c k down the hill , and Dustin got m e du ring my tro uble." Je re my Ketc hu m also h ad h i s share of tro ub le, ex cept his was at the start of th e rac e. It seemed he experienced a slight delay due to th e slic k track. He tried to st art his bike lik e ev e ry o ne e l s e , but i t wouldn 't g o . When he finall y got it to go, it went too fast and wound up toppling ov er in front of th e spec tato rs. " For the first two miles, I made so many stupid mistak e s , " K etchum adm itted. "I was not a happy camper, because all I could think of was my awful sta rt ." Th e Smith/MSR-spon sored Ketchum se t t le d int o a sm o o the r pa c e a nd wound up ta k in g sec o n d place in 20 0cc A cl ass and eig hth overal l. Hen dri c k s a nd G ibso n remained the l ead er s for the rest of the race , while Smith came in third a m inute after Gibson hit the score tent. The next racer through was 200cc A rid er Mark Guy. wh o grabbed first plac e in his c l a s s . He was followed by 250/0pen A rider Alan Westerfield . Other riders in the top 25 inc lude d Sen ior winner Dale Stallings , who c a m e in 12th overall, and David Lamb erth , who grabbed sec ond p lace in the Vet class and 23rd overall. Stallings was the top Senior on his Kawasak i, and second p la c e in th e class we nt to Suzuki jockey Ron ni e Hac k ett for t he second time this season . T he Youth race had 19 riders wh o rac ed in th e aoc c class and 34 Youth riders in all. T he top Youth riders in t h e aocc c la ss were Chaz Gr een , Joshua Evangelist and Justin Wall. T he to p rider s fo r the 60cc class were out of action, Hines earning his work credit and Norton out with a broken FREETOWN, MA, MAY 28 foot. Known by some as th e "rolle r co aster" trail s fo r th e swee ping uph ill and downhill run s, th e sectio n was di v id ed into two parts. A check about four miles was barely zeroed by a handful of AA riders. including Bob White , defen ding NETRA champion Hans Neff, and Peter Tanner. Most of the A -r id er fi e l d dropped one point. At th e che ck out of the section . a two was the score to beat. Cayer. Wh ite, Jerry Madore and Neff all edged out with two points api ece . An untimed section of trail follow ed . leading back to the start ar ea for the day's first gas stop. It was here that the club had to make up for the lost sect ion by in se r ti n g a reset in its place.
