"It seemed like everyone was lined up far outside or very far inside - the whole middle of the start ing line was really deep mud," Huffman said. -I came from the outside. where I holeshot my qualifier from. and there wasn't a person around me. I thought I had the holeshot and. at the last second, I just felt someone from the very inside line. We just got together in the first tum. I think a lot of people just piled up on me. After they pulled the bikes off me I was still laying there. TortelIi got up. took off and ended up running over my leg.- Huffman suffered from a stiff neck and a sore ankle, forcmq him to sit out the second mota . from -behind r ide by T o r t e ll i for f ourth. MOTOTWO Windham again rocketed t o the hol eshot, follo wed this tim e out by Vuillemin , Dowd, Carmichael , Tortelli and Ferry . Not wanting to let th e leaders get aWj3Y, Carmichael q uick l y moved around Dowd . T ortelli was th e next to attack Dowd , slicing under t h e Ka w as ak i r ider to tak e o v er t h e fo urth position. W indham , w h o seemed to be fa ll ing off . the pace a b it later in the d a y , was the next rider t o fall v ic tim to th e d etermined Carmichael and soon th ere after , Tortell i , dropping him to fourth. Tortell i w as the next rider t o go b y Vuillemin , sa il - 18 J UNE 28 , 2000' c ue • e Huffman wasn't the only one to feel the effects of the crash.Team Yamaha s David Vuillemin took a heavy blow to the head, gouging his helmet and leaving the young Frenchman temporarily disoriented. "I rode like five laps in the first mota and I could not remember the track. My head was hurting very badly. Afte r the first mota I was kind of lost - I could not rememberwhere I was. I recovered a little bit and gained some points in the second moto. I'm very happy for that." Vuillemin went 14-3 for sixth overall. There's just no stopping the kid's popularity. Team Suzuki's Travis Pastrana made yet another television appearance on the Tuesday evening prior to the Budds Creek National. Appearing on WRC·TV, the Washington, D.C.. NBC affiliate, Pastrana had the distinction of being interviewed by noted sports journalist George MIChael. The segment included footage of the now-infamous San Francisco Bay jump. Travis' injury in Vegas and his appearance on the Tonight Show. When asked for his feelings about his first year on the pro circuit, the ever-humble Pastrana replied, "I actually have autographs from a lot of the riders I'm now racing against. so this is like a dream come true." Speaking of Pastrana, the I S-year·old prodigy competed at Budds Creek with an injured ankle. "I injured it practicing during the week,- Pastrana explained. -I was doing a moto and at about the 20-minute mark. I put my foot down over the takeoff of a small jump. I ran over my foot on the way up and ended up Ripping off the track into a tree . It' s a little bit sore. I've had it in a bucket of ice water every hour, on the hour. for the last four days." Noticeably absent from action at Budds Creek wes Team Honda's Ezra Lusk. "Ezra injured his wrist practicing Thursday." Honda Team Manager Cliff White explained. " Right now, it' s too sore for him to ride. X-rays showed nothing broken, but because of how swollen and sore it is. I'm not totally convinced that is the case. We're going to try to have him go to more of a specialist to make sure there's nothing seriously wrong." n e _ s THQ Holeshot Awards were presented at Budds Creek. Works Connection / DGY/ Honda' s Steve Lamson t ook the fir st 125c c mot a holes hot , while FMF/H onda s Brock Sellards pocketed the cash for his great start in the second 125cc mota . Team Hondas Kevin Windham scored both 250cc mota holeshots. The 125cc riders receive $500 for each holeshot . while the 250cc riders each get $1000. With his win, Team Chevy Trucks/Kawa saki's Ricky Carmichael ties Steve Lamson for the most National overall wins at Budds Creek with thr ee . Lamson to ok th e 125cc v ict or ie s in ' 94, ' 95 and '9S, while Carmichael scored 125cc victories in '97 and '98 - and the 250cc win in 2000. Speaking of Lamson, the Works Connection /DGY/ Honda pilot has a very real shot at becoming the winningest 125cc National rider in AMA history. Lamson currently has 21 125cc National victories to his credit - just fou r race s shy of the rec ord s har ed by M ark Barn ett and Ricky Carmichael. In order to narrow the field to 40 riders per class. a series of qualifiers were run on Sunday morning. Mazda /Cheperrel/Yern eha 's Tim Ferry took the first 250cc qualifier win. The seco nd 250cc qualifier win went to KTM 's Shayne King. Bill"s Pipes/Motorious.com/Suzuki's Branden ..Jesseman won the first 125cc qualifier and Yamaha of Troy's Ernesto Fonseca t oo k the se c o nd 125cc qua li fier vict o ry . Tr iad Motorsports/Protel·backed Yamaha rider Jim Neese won the 250cc consolation race and Planet Honda's Jason McCormick took the win in the 125cc consolation race. U.S. Tobacco continues to support the privateers in the outdoor series with its Top Privateer Awards . Freestat e Cy cles/Bumpstiks/ O 'N eal/Bieff e-backed Suzuki rider Tom Welch. from nearby Charlotte Hall. Maryland. scored the top award in the 125cc class for his outs tanding 13-15. 13th overall finish. followed by Team Motoworld of EI Cajon's Greg Schnell, who went 12-32 for 18th overall. Uneman Cycles/Pro Action-backed Yamaha rider Jason Thomas. who celebrated his birthday at Budds Creek. was the top 250cc privateer. finishing 12-13. for 12th overall. Runner up honors in the 250cc class went to Team MotaXXX's Kyle Lewis, who finished 15-12, for 13th overall. The top finisher in each class receives $1000 , while the runner-up receives $500 . SplitFire/Pro Circuit Kawasaki's Nick Wey also celebrated a birthday at Budds Creek. Wey turned 20 but didn't have too much to celebrate. A first -mot e tangle relegated Wey to a non-paints-paying 22nd-place finish. but the second time out Wey took seventh. Still. his t l th-place overall wasn't what he had in mind when he came to Budds Creek .
