At Roa d America , it was his team which let him dow n , tw ice , in fact , b ut , come race time , it didn 't stop him . Two d ays a fter surviving a horrific practice crash when his brake ca lipers fell out at the end of the long front stra ig ht , Team O liver Yamaha's Oliv e r was back on p a c e , though th ere wa s a no th er gl itc h . Prior to the race th e tire warmers ha d failed to heat up h is rubber p ro perly, poss ibly , Olive r th ou ght, beca use a circuit blew o n his gen erat o r and no one not ic ed . "My bike was very close to his , speedwise, wh ich is really nice for a change, the th ing was prett y c lose : Sands said . "I was able to hang with him for a li ttle w hil e there . He 'd blow n up the motor on his TZ250 Yamaha and the team had to re bu ild it in time for the start. By the time Sands lost Oliver, he 'd built up a comfortab le gap on Sorensen, an d the race didn't provide much drama in the top p laces. Sorensen said he lo st the draft in the early go ing and then concent ra ted ' o n doing fast, clean laps . "I guess to ward s th e end there I sta rted to catch Ro land, bu t he ha d a lready h ad a nice g ap , h e h a d a co mfo rtable le ad o n me," Sore nsen sa id.
