By 30 YEARS AGO••• JUNE 23, 1970 Factory Triu mph racer Gary Nixon graced the cover of Issue #23, cig arette in hand, as he ended his appa rent b ad- l uc k st r eak by win n in g ' the Lou don 1DO- Mile National road race in Lo udon, New Ham p shire. After being narrowly defeated in the Ughtw eight division by Yvo n Duham el (Ya m) , Nixo n came back with a vengeance to win the National Championship feature. Dave Smith (Kaw) and Don Emde (Yam) chased him in vain for second and th ird, respecti vely... The Baja 500 was thoroughly dominated by the team of Bill Silverthorn and Gene Fetty (Hus), with an elapsed lim e of J2 hours, 36 mi nutes. The only better tim e was put in by th e Fo rd Br on co o f Parn ell i Jon es at 11:5 5... K enny Roberts (Suz) defeated Gary Jo nes (Yam) by inches to win the Novice main event at Ascot Cycle Park in Gardena, Californ ia. He defeated points leader Hank Scott (H-D) and Bill y Labrie (H-D) to move into a tie for second in the points with fourth-place finisher Alex Jorgensen (H-D) . For the second week in a row, a life was lost during t he week end 's festivities as 20 -year-old St eve Dallef eld was kill ed during Friday's practice session after sliding off his motorcycle and getting struck by another rider... Team Suzuki 's Kent Howerton too k two co me -from-behind victories at the final round of the AMA 250cc National Champi onship MX Series, which also earned him the class cham pionship fo r the season. JeanMichel Bayle (Hon) won round 15 of the AMA /Cam el Supercross Series in Foxboro, Massachusetts, over Jeff Ward (Kaw) and Mike LaRoc co (Suz) . In fact their voca l minority has driv en th em to positions on recreation access th at are increa singly being recognized as ex treme . F ortun ately for u s , t h is is ca usi ng them to los e f avor wi t h the ge neral p ubli c and is really wak ing up o ur " sh ared use" recrea t io nists. Rec en tl y , the C l int o n/G ore Ro adless lock u p has unified the multi -use com m unity, on a national level, like nothing I've ever seen before . O ne of the best ways to express your o p i nio n on recrea t ion access iss ues i s t h ro u g h t h e letters to the edi tor of your loca l p a p e r. L o c a l po li ticians, land m an ag ers and yo ur co ngress io na l r ep r es en ta t ive s t ake le tte r s to th e ed itor ve ry seriou s ly. Th is la st month , I 'v e s e en s e v er al ex celle nt ex a m p les that help make my point and might even give you some id eas. O ne of our local members wrote a letter to ou r hometown paper about the green attack on snowmobiling in Yellowstone Park. The anti-recreation organizations have b een disto rt ing the figures on snowmob ile emissions and the National Park Service even had to re trac t some of the in fo rm ati o n they ha d d istr ibu t ed o n t his issue. Nanci Co lu mbo wrote , "T h ey say tha t snowmob iles pollute the air so b ad that it is equiva lent to a major c ity in Califor nia. " W ell , I b eg yo ur pa rdon. If we took all t he snowmobiles in Idaho , W yoming , Mon tana and a few more surround- it as a guest o p in ion w ith her photo . " A nd to all conc erned ci t izens w ho do care wha t 's h appenin g i n their n a t i o n a l forests , don 't l e t a few extremists determine how y ou r p ub lic l a n d s a re b e i n g managed . Get involved in t h e management of th e nationa l fo rests . You won 't be lieve how happy the w ildlife biologists and forester s a re to rece ive comments from the pub lic that are reasonable, co nstructive and under standing. " I hope these examples have i n s p i r e d you . I recently found some of the letters to th e editor I w ro te 'w h en I first got involved in r ep rese nting l o c a l O HV enthus ia sts y e a r s ago . It was very satisfy in g then and reading them now still inspires me. Give it a try ! CN Ra iner Huck, President of the Utah Shared Access Alliance, got a letter published in the S alt Lake T r i bune. His letter was c ritical of th e media for accept ing g reen adv ocacy g roup claims without quest ion .
