(The company also plans to open Vespa stores around the world in the next 18 months. ) The museum is dedicated to the late Giovanni Alberto Agnelli, the youthful former president of Piaggio who tragically die d of cance r two years ago but whose pet project the museum was. The outstanding display (occupying more than 9 ,900 sqare feet ) of more th an 100 powered two-wheelers includes a complete selection of the more than 16 million Vespas built in over 100 different versions by Piagg io in the 54 years since the prototype on display in Pontedera was constructed in 1945. It also houses the ent ire contents of the Gilera factory museum at Arcore, which have never been on public display since the his toric Italian motorcycle marque dating from 1909 (and thus 13 years older even than Moto Guzzi!) was acquired by Piaggio in 1969. These include such superb, restored machines as the 1939 supercharged, water-cooled, 500cc Rondine GP racer; the postwar air-cooled 500cc fours which consistently defeated MV Agusta to win a host of world titles before Gilera retired from competition in 1957; the jewel-like 125cc twin-cylinder GP racer; the 250cc V-twin MX world cham pion from the 1970s; and a huge array of Gilera road models from World War I onwards. In addition to the several unusual and imaginative Vespa, Ciao and other PTW models on display, Piaggio's many other fields of endeavour since the company was founded in Genoa in 1882 are also covered by the display. Among these are some of the company's many aviation projects, such as the magnificent 18-cylinder rotary engine built for the Italian Air Force from 1939 onwards. The Museo Piaggio is open to the public four days a week, from Wednesday to Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and is a must-stop visit for any enthusiast of Italian engineering on sea, land or air travelling in this scenic and historic part of north-central Italy.
