Northeast Classic Motocross Series Round 3: Broome-Tioga Sports Center By J IM P. Kratz sc ored a perfec t I - I for the ov e rall in the 125s , but he had to work ha rd to to p the 250cc c la ss with a 3 - I score. Rid e r turnout was exce llen t, with just over 600 riders signed up to race. Mother Nature provided a b e a ut ifu l da y, and track conditions were perfect. In th e first 250c c Open E x p e rt moto , there were more riders than there were gate s . Forty -six e xperts lined up, but Richard Pinney e arned ho le sh ot honors . Ba rry Ca rste n was a ve ry close second. Pinne y and Ca rsten were s ide by side over the uphi ll triple , a nd Ca rsten had the lead by the sk i ju mp . When th e leade rs came off th e Nat ional hill, the to p five were Carst en, Scott Carte r, Pinn e y, Da g Bo ye s en a nd Pa u l A us t in . B ru c e Str a tton passed Aust in for fifth at the start of lap two . Halfway into lap two , Boyese n to o k the poi nt, with Au s tin , Pin ney , Ca rsten a nd Stra tto n tra iling . Carste n a nd Ca rte r bum ped on the top of the Nationa l hill a nd wen t dow n, but bo th recovered qui ckly. Ca rsten remounted in fourth and Ca rte r in s ixth . By th e start of la p th re e , Ca rste n an d Stratton had moved into th ird and fou rth, wh ile Pinn ey dr opped to fifth. Boye sen wa s still o ut front. Ca rs te n moved into second , releg ating Austin to t h ird. S tr att o n held fourth , with Kratz in fifth and charging a fter a m idp a ck s t a rt . Then , o n the fo llowing double ju m p, Austin crashe d, whic h allowed Kratz to m ove up to fourth. Carsten came off th e hill still in the lead, with Stratton pres s uring Boyesen for second . Stratton m ad e th e pa ss at th e base of the Nationa l hill, but Boyes en c ame rig ht ba c k a nd pa ssed Stratt on ba ck in th e following turn . Stratton passed Boye sen ba ck by t he fina l tre e t u rn befor e the Broome -Tioga d inner ta ble. Carsten took t h e win , follow ed by Stratton , Kratz , Ca rte r and Boyesen .
