The class was a comb ined v ers ion , w ith th e The race ma y hav e taken two day s to com plete , but it to ok Kawasaki rider Jessi ca Patterson only 40 minutes to knock off her opp onents at the Hangtown round of the AMA/WML Outd oor Championship MX Series. The racin g acti on for the Wom en Experts got underway on Saturday for thei r first m ota , and it was a di fferent Kawa sak i rider, Angie Keunjtes, who was first off the gate. But it was Patterson who would claim the lead early in the first lap. Leading the group into the first tum, Patterson was foll owed cl osely by Keunjtes, and then Jackie Hudson. Traci Flemming, Sheena Patterson, Mercedes Gonzales-Natvig and Stefy Bau. It wouldn't take long for the defending champion, Bau, to start her move through the pack . By the end of the first lap , Bau was knocking on Keunjt es' back door. Bau and Keunjtes traded the lead back and forth for about thr ee laps until Bau finally mad e a pass att em pt stick . Bau then set her sights on Patterson but ran off the tra ck less than a lap later, becom ing tangl ed in the flags that line the tra ck . She freed herself quickly, but appeared to lose steam after that. While Bau and Patterson were batt ling for first plac e, 9-lime Women's Motocross Champio n Mercedes Gonzalez-Natvlq. Matt M cCrummen overcame a l Oth in the first mota to score sixth overa ll w ith a second in the sec o nd mota. Derek Natvig had a pair of wins in th e over 2 5 A class , topping former Pro Eric DuCray and Ed Hea cox. T im Olson won the o ve r 2 5 B cl ass with a pair of mota wins. Brad Schultz took s e cond w ith a 3-3, f ini sh in g a hea d M o nty Ware, D ann y B a rb e r a nd J ohn M o ore. Scott M all o ry was t he " m an " in the Vet B class w it h a pair of mota wins. Mike A lessi to pped Gonzalez-Natv ig said, "Kawasaki was generous to give me a bike to be a spokesperson for them. so in return I will race a few races." Meanwhile, behind the leaders, Candace English went out after seizing the engine on her Yamaha. Hudson later crashed hard and dropped out of the race. though she would return for mota two the next day. Th e m oto win ended up going to Patterso n, follo wed by Bau , Keunjt es and Gonzalez-Natvlg. In Sunday's moto, Hudson grabbed the holeshot. But j ust li ke Saturday's moto, It didn't take long for Patterson to move up and take over first place. Once she was in the lead. she was never challenged. Hudson later pulled off for repair s and rejoined the race, where she would eventually finish in fourth .. The Dunlop/Fox/Pro Circu it -back ed Patterson went on to win the race over Bau, Gonzalez-Natv ig and Keunjtes . "It was great. " Patterson said. "Th e track was a little rough but that suited me fine. It was really dry, too , but the track was really nice today, I liked it ."
