(Left) Chuck Woodford did well for his first M oose Run, sharing the lea d with Andrews during the race and ending up second• ... BRIEF LY•• • For Fred Andrews. this marked his third Moose Run. With the victory. he is believed to be the only racer with wins at both the late Blackwater 100 and the Moose Run (or its predecessor the Illinois Cross-Country Championship). Mark Hyde is always good for a great quip. and he had this to say about his day: - I can't remember the last time I spent this much time off my bike in a race. I went out there and I knew better: the first two laps, I said. 'Just don't get yourself in trouble: And it seems like that's all I did - I got hung up on logs. stuck on hills. doing this, doing that - just stupid. Then you do it once and you lose energy. and it just snowballs. it just kills you.· Jeff Fredette did double duty again. winning the two -hour " Baby Moose · race for the umpteenth time on Saturday. Laid out on a different. easier eight-mile course to accommodate the vintage bikes and ATVs, the Saturday race is becoming more popular than Sunday's hardcore Moose Run. As per usual. Fredette overalled the event despite the handicap of being a Pre· '9 1 vintage-class entrant on the '85 KOX200 that he raced at the ISDE in Spain that year. Also entered in the Saturday event on older bikes were former ISOTIE racers Dick Burleson and Gary Hazel. Eight-time AMA National Enduro Champion Burleson raced the '88 Husky 510 he shared with Casey Folks in the Baja 1000 that year. while Hazel competed aboard the '88 Honda XR250R he raced to a silver medal at the ISOE in France that year. Neither figured in the results, though. Hazel crashed out and broke a few ribs. while Burleson ended up trail riding so he could bang bars with promoter Bill Gusse. who likes to ride along to keep an eye on the race in progress. Former motocrosser and Team Green technician Dennis Hawthorne showed up to race the Moose Run but discovered that his KX250 had a cylinder leak due to a fatigued stud. Since he had only one bike. it appeared that he wouldn't be abie to race that is until Jeff Fredett e stepped up with a bike for him to borrow. It was a KOX200. of course. However, it was the same KDX200 he'd won the Saturday race With - his '85 - and hadn't even been cleaned. Nonetheless. Hawthorne accepted it and rode it in the Vet A class. He made a lap before parking it and heading home. reportedly muttering something about not wanting to hurt himself or the 15·year-old bike. > cue' e n e _:s . JUNE 7 . 2000 25
