M onsi gno r o o o o o o o o Ducati threw itself a party Monday night and the beautiful people came, among them Ducati Motor SpA President and CEO Federico Minoli (left) and comedian Sandra Bernhard (right) . Officially, the event at Ducati's North American flagship store, Ducati Manhattan, a few blocks from T imes Square in New York City, was to celebrate the launch of Lady Danger, the Fall 2000 color collection of MAC Cosmetics , a maverick in the fashion industry. Ducati claims that women are the largest new segment of motorcycle riders in Italy and comprise 10% of worldwide sales for the Ducati Monster, their best seIling model, so the tie -in with MAC Cosmetics was a natural. "I find it fascinating," Minoli began, "that there are hardcore motorcyclists and these that are beginning 'to love the bike. We have a word for it in Italian, 'innamoramento,' like t een ag ers falling in love. That's what's happening w ith Ducati and women. It's fresh and it's exciting." Ducati had more than one reason to party , Minoli said . Sales figures for the first quarter are in and the numbers are worth celebrating. "Sales are up 47 % and profit is up 60% , wh ich is a hell of a start to the year," Minoli said . "There's a component of lu ck involved , but what we're doing , we 're doing right. Being able to come to New York and throw a party in our store is quite a bit different than it was five years ago." Minoli was going to spend about a week in th e U.S., to uring Ducati dealerships in th e Northeast . Bernhard played the part of the hostess, Lady Danger, for the event, arr iv ing on the back of a red Du cati Monster and entertaining the packed showroom, many of whom . were women wh o rode to the West Side dealers hi p.
