Marty Lewis put the JG /R od Lake Trium ph out in front of the Sportsman Vintag e 750s, a he ad of Greg Wilburn , Horton a nd Clyde Den ne n, on the lon e Norton . Den ne n moved around Horton to jo in Wilbu rn a nd Lewis in a three way race for the lead . Wilburn took the lo w lin e and De nn e n the high lin e , bo th getting past Lewis . Denne n took the lead com ing onto t h e front s traight. Lewis h el d second , with Wilburn on his ta il. Horton's bike qu it on the back chute. Wilburn held the big Triumph down on the low s ide of the groove to run alongside Lewis, losing out on th e exit and remaining in third. With the white flag out, Wilburn once a g ai n tr ied the low line in one and two , pulling even but not ahead. This time, Lewis d idn't pull away. Den nen pulled out a half-straightaway lead at the flag. Wilburn he ld the low line through the final two corners as Lewis slipped up high and into the marbles , los ing his driv e and letting Wilburn take the runner -up spot . Steffen gr abbed th e lead in th e '70s Singles cla ss, chased by Horton on th e lone Honda , but J im Gardner and Ji m Steet collided and we nt down in turn one, bringing ou t the red flag . On the restart, Steffen on ce again pull ed a good lead, followed this time by Keith Bradford , Hort on , Steet and Gardne r. Horton worke d his way past Bradford for second a nd began to close on Stef fen. Th e le ader wa s cl ick ing off fast, co ns iste nt la ps, an d while Ho rt on could close in on Steffen, pass ing was an other matter. Loveland Motorspo rts ' Steve Lacey was jus t as im pressive, putting in hi s first- ever 1- 1 performance for the ove rall in the Over 30 C class. Colorado Powe rsports' Josh Kellogg took the holeshot in the fi rst l25cc A rnoto , with T.J . Russell and Nebrask a's Tre nt Hansen dicing for seco nd . Chad Zul ian rai led past bo th Russell and Hansen for second within half a lap . Short got we dged out in turn t wo and was forced back a few positions, but he cha rged back up to seco nd with a pass over Zulia n j ust before the completion of lap one. Then Short ju mped into the lead, and he and Kellogg set a remarkabl e pace and pulled away from the fiel d . Zulian sli pped to fourth . Doug Leavitt held down th ird . Young was clic king off some fast lap times, but he was still unable to shake Buck elew, who saw a cha nce to get by Young wh en he almost lost his fro nt end in a comer. Buckelew then set his sig hts on the leader, and he was cl earl y cutting into Hamblin 's lea d when ti me ran out . When the chec kers wav ed, it was Ham bli n w ith th e win, fo llo wed by Bu ck elew and Young. In the seco nd m oto , Buck elew grabbed the holeshot, with Valdez. Young and Hamblin follo wi ng . Bu ck el ew had clea r track ahea d an d tried to pull away from the pack . Valdez, in second , found hi mself once again trying to keep a fast Young beh ind him . Young got by Valdez by railing the inside of a berm. Ham bli n tried to go along with Young , but Valdez shut the door . Still out front, bu sti ng o ut th e fastest lap ti mes all day, Buck elew stre tched his lead to 10 seconds . T he battle was on for th ird ; Valdez held just a bike length o ver Hamblin .
