Jason Goodwin A bright spot in the Wrenchead.com Natronal Dirt Tr ack Series' cla ss and form at innovatio ns ju st one week ago , the Pro Singles cl ass was rocked by contro versy at the Indy Mile as allegations were leveled that certain 600cc-mo unted riders were running the wrong restrictors in oversized mot ors. The class is prim arily designed to allo w the development of unrestricted 40 0~ for com petit ion against restricted 600s , but some of the 400 teams com plained that it was pretty clea r there were shenanigans going on. KTM rider Joe Kopp park ed his bike after practi ce to protest the situat ion. "I parked it," Kopp said. "I knew that I would be down on horsepower, but we got yanked out there. This is suppos ed to be a 400 cc class. We don't need all those big 600s running out there." Kenny Noyes , who act ually rides a U neaweaver Racing Husaberg 400 with back ing from the Swedish factory, also voiced concerns that some of the 600s migh t be illegal. "You asked me at Fort Worth if the form ula was good, but after tonight, my answer is defin itely not. I was doing everyth ing I could to run with Will Davis and Roger Lee Hayden. running it into the corners harder and whatever, but they were j ust pulling away down the straightaways." There m ay have been reason for concern after the races, as Hayden's own team mate, Davis, stated during the post -race interviews that Hayd en was "ri ding one of those 670s." Hayden denied any wrongdoing. (Rtx): 10. Jere m y T hompson ( Rtx) ; 1 1. Scott Stump (Rtx): 12. Jacob Latimer (W· R): 13. Cory Roth (Rtx); 14 . Brian Vincent (Rtx); 15. J.R. Schnabel (W-R); 16. " Although Formula USA officials impounded the top four motorcycles after the race, none of them were tom down and the standings were declared official. Formul a USA Dirt Track Director of Operations Bob Moran said that the Formula USA rulebook has provisions for running engines displacing more than 600cc, but that both the restrictor and carburetor sizesare required to be different than that of a standard 600. "Th ere is a I mm smaller restr ictor required with a larger carbureto r," Mor an said. "To my k now ledge, every ri der li sted his 600based bike as a 600 ." So why not tear them down? " We had every intention of teari ng down two of the top four finishers before the mai n event was even run: Moran said. "But with the way things developed in the National class, that became less of a priority. Once the 30- mi nute ti me lim it for protests and appeals had passed, it was basically at our discretion. But we are going to revise the rules for the 600 s on the m iles. Th ey make more torque. which allows them to push through the wind better. We also want to get a displ acem ent auditing device, like they use with sprint cars. Th ey aren't an end-all, but they can tell you if something might be wrong. "We feel that we are pretty dialed-i n on the half mil es," Moran continued. "This is just one of those areas where we need to get more organized. O ur intentions are good. But the execution needs work." ler Racin g/ Moto Xtremes' Sam Lowe c ue . e nelftl's MAY 2 4 , 2000 27
