AHRMA Spe ed & Spore N a t io n al M X/Vin t a g e M otor-cycle Days W e s t C e lebr-a t ion Brad Lackey (2) was in flying fonn in Sonoma. He won the 40+ Expert class on a cz. By MIKE V ANCIL PHOTOS BY MITcH FR!EDI'\AN SONOMA. CA, APR, 29·30 T here was no lack of luster on the performance of forme r SOOcc World Mo tocros s Cham pion Brad Lackey who com peted in the 40 + Expert class at the Vintage Motorcycle Days West Celebratio n at Sears Point , which also hosted a round of the American Historic Racin g Motorcycle Associa tion Nation al Cham pionsh ip MX Series. From any vantage point on the wide-open spaces at Sears Point, it was like stepping back into a m otoc ro ss ti me warp; it was a huge g rass -track typical of the Euro pean Grand Prix courses and this one was laid out by the legendary Dick Mann, so it had p lenty of off-camber turns and switchbacks. Lackey was comfortably back in the saddle of a CZ 400cc rocket ship , and the only thing missing was a rubber dove on the crossbar. The ponytail was flying in the breeze and Lack ey was on the Another MX great Billy Grossi began to show signs of hi s former self, as he powered past a pack of riders to ta ke second place but was still not in a position to offer up a challe nge to Lacke y. Dallas Ny blod was able to find his w ay int o th ird place aboard h is ' 7 4 Yamaha and, altho ugh pushed for a time by Alfredo Rodil on a '70 CZ, was able to hang onto that positi on to the end. In moto two , Lackey jum ped out to an early lead. Parker showed a comeback effort in the second moto and powered his way to second place and then had to hold off the repeated challenges by J .P. Morgan and his fast '74 Bultaco 250. Lackey showed his appreciation for the reception his performance drew from the fans and assisted in the troph y presentations at the conclusion of the festivities. gas. • In th e first moto, it was not a "gim m ie" for the champ , as he had to rid e in the roost of Steve Parker on a fast '74 Husky 400. By lap three in the f i ve-lap moto, Lackey found a way to pow er by Parker and th en stretc h out a fair-size lead. Parker faded and ended up in seventh place. David Boydstun won the Classic 500cc Expert class on his HU5qvama. 40 MAY 17, 2000 ' cue I e n e "'" s A re-ch arged Ken Corpe ditched his last-years' jink s and powered to tw o spectacula r moto w in s in the Prem ier Open Tw in Expert class. In moto one Corpe had to deal with a very fast and determined Intermediate cla ss rider, Joel Sweeney , on a 'S7 BSA 6S0c c . Th e O pen Twin Experts and Int ermediates shared the second-w ave start in a moto that was loaded with talent. (Wave one featured the Prem ier SOO Experts and Intermediates.) Once free of Sweeney, it was careful motoring for Corp e. He was riding with a bit mo re deliberate and smooth style so that he didn't have to deal with a DNF for the second year in a row. (He brok e last year while leading.) Th e extra care and detailed preparatio n paid off this year, as Corp e cam e to the checkers ahead of D av e J aniec o n hi s ' S8 A JS 6 S0 ma ch ine. (AJS was famous for their singles but their twins were no slouches.) Co rp e repea ted his perf orm ance in . moto two , as did the second- and thir dplace finishers Ja niec and Beno Rodi, on his '67 Norton. The largest class of the day was the Plus 40 Novice class, with 33 riders sent on their way with a single-wave start via the tried and true rubbe r-band starting system. (All to ld there were nearly SOO entries.) Just a few feet out of the start area, the battle that was to last the entire moto began when th ree riders all took turns lea din g. Mark Co rr e r g ot th e holesho t and was a c onte nde r on h is Elsinore Honda for the better part of the first lap. Mark Hammond passed him on his '74 Yamaha , but Corter passed him back. Then it was Rich ard Vill anu eva who asse rte d h imself and pu t h is ' 73 Rickman into the front o n th e hardcharging pack. Somewhere Corter came to grief, as he was back mi dpack by lap three and would en d up with an llth pla c e finish. Ham m o nd took every advantage and was able to move into the lead and keep it to the end. Villanueva followed in second place and Bob Byers was rewarded for his efforts by ending up third on his '74 Honda 250. Moto two saw Cort er, Hammond and Byers jump out in front. This time, Correr was not to be denied , and he kept his 3SOcc Honda on its wheels and in front of an equally determin ed Mark Ham mond on the 360 Yamaha . Bob Byers was the m ost con sistent rid er with his two third -plac e fin ishes . Th e battl e in moto two was won by Correr, but his earlier 11th -place finish only gave him a fifth overall. It was a case of the battl e lost and the war won by Ham m ond, as his first - and second-place fin ishes gave him the overall cla ss victory. Bob Byers ended second overall for the d ay , and t h ird pla c e en de d up wi t h Rich ar d Yaman e o n a ' 7 2 BSA fourstro ke single, with his fourth - and fifthplace efforts. Unfortunatel y , the AHRMA and th e racin g com m unity lost a dear friend and co m petitor - Don Roufs , of Midpines , Cal iforni a. Roufs had fin ished in fifth plac e abo ard his '74 Montesa 2 S0c c Cappra in the Plus 60 Expert cl ass but mom ents later suffered what becam e a fatal hea rt attack. He had im m ed iat e EMT assistance but could not be saved. Many offe red prayers for Roufs' family when the announcem ent was m ade on the P.A . system . Rouf will be missed and all who knew him were pleased he was able to spend his final day doing what he CN lik ed m ost. Sears Poillt Raceway_ So-. CalitDmia Results: April 29-30, 2000 30. NO V: I.
