The sectio ns were on the t ou gh side , but very safe and fun . T he kids' tria l was persona lly overseen by six -t ime Natio na l Cham p io n Rya n Young himself, w h ile th e se ctio ns were the handiwork of J im Wi nter , with help from Pacific Int ern ational Trials Society club helpers . The k id s rode one of several lin es, depend ing o n th e ir ag e , w i th sp lit gates in m ost of th e fi ve section s. Th e youngest ki d s - in the 7 - and 8 -year old classes - took to a li ne equa l to the PITS cl ub' s ty p ical Sat urday Vintage/Beginner T rial " fo ur" li ne , while t he ol der ki d s r ode p rog re ss i v el y m ore d iffi c ult li nes accordi ng t o th eir ag es . Sect ion three w as apparently quite c hallengi ng; sev er al o b serve rs who had att ended other Rya n Young Youth T ri als sa id i t was th e m o s t ch all enging sec ti o n to date. Other rid er s found section two , w ith it s "log cascade," the toughest. In a change of forma t, the k ids traverse d each of the five sections three ti mes (in turn s) befo re m ovin g on en ma ss to the nex t se ctio n. Th e fi rst three sectio ns we re rig ht in fr on t of t he si g n-up /awards / pad dock area , and spectator access was excellent. Section s four and fiv e were loc at ed a sho rt distan ce awa y in the PITS area, 52 MAY 10, 2000 ' cue I IE! j ust a stone's throw from th e cl ose st section. Highlig ht s of these sect ion s in cluded num erous elevation cha nges and c r eek cross ing s in "M u r d ere rs Gulch." Young announced each k id 's nam e and ag e before their attempts , and a good c r o w d of parent s a nd fa ns applaude d the k ids' efforts. The tria l started at 3 p .m ., and th e ba k er ' s dozen of youngsters rode a total of 2 1/2 hours fo r an afternoo n of tr ial s the y wo n't soo n forget. Racing in th ese c ond iti ons is not new to ma ny of these riders, and lap times actually got shorter on the second and final lap. Sunda y bro ug ht clearer skies, bu t the cou rse was still ve ry muddy , as two inches of additional rain fell overnig ht. In t he F ou r- Stro k e Ex pert class , Walter Sc hwarz was c ru is ing t o h i s sec ond victory of th e weekend o n hi s TTR3 2 0 when D on Two mb le y, o n a borrowed 1 9 9 5 Husaberg 400 , knocked on th e door w ith two miles to g o . Tom Sw e ar ing en Jr. , K ac e A ll en and Sc ott Durr battled for the O ver 3 0 Amateur win , wh ile Joe Barrell, Rich ard W il son and Dan Menele y wa ge d war in th e Over 50 class. As the weekend drew to a close, the general o pi n io n in th e p it s was that this had been another outstanding race in the g reat No rthwest. Within an hour of fi nis hing , all the sco res were po st ed and tro phies were hand ed out - in all, an excellent job by the MRA.
