kes in fourth with 113 and Canadian Wilson Craig finished fifth with 134. SUNDAY Ray Peters, who wasn't particularly crazy about his ride on Saturday, found his form on Sunday and turned in a 23-point card to lead by four points after the first loop. The 27 -year old Bultaco ace is making a comeback after knee surgery last fall and is starting to recover 'Iast year's form. Ryon Bell, Geoff Aaron and Jess Kempkes got off to slow starts, but were all still within striking distance going into the second loop. Bell was visibly upset over two fives that he took on the last two Bultaco's Ray Peters continues to post good results, finishing just off the back of Bell and Aaron on both days of competition. Peters finished the weekend with third and fourth place finishes. the flats as an excuse. "I think so far this has been the best national I have ridden. Nothing dangerous, just incredibly slippery and incredibly technical." Aaron had his own feelings on the event. "Last weekend I stayed back (and let the other riders go first) and it seemed to work really good for me. Today I got to see the section~ break in for me (by staying back) and I got to pick some of my own lines that no one else saw," Aaron said about his winning ride. "I feel I made a few lines for myself that were better, so I'm trying the hang back technique now." Ray Peters finished out the podium with a total of 100 points with Kemp- sections. "I bounced off of one of the rocks and my back tire went over the marker," Bell said of the first five. "I was not happy with that at all." Peters, whose first loop was pretty much error free, would have increased his lead even more on loop two had it not been for two mistakes. "Ray fived section seven when a rock rolled out from under his rear wheel just before a step," said Ray's minder, Gary Jackson. "It was unfortunate because he had a clean on his first ride there." Another five on the exit of number 13 dropped Peters' loop score to 27, however he was still tied for the lead with Ryon Bell at 52. Aaron was in third after two with 57 and Kempkes fourth with 59. Nine points separated the top five going into the weekend's final loop and everyone knew that disaster could strike quickly on the unforgiving sections. On this loop it was Bell's turn for bad luck in section seven. "I cleaned the hard part, where everyone was having problems, but got a rear tire puncture in the process," Bell said. "I went to ride through the easy part. You had to be right on a perfect line over some rocks, and my tire was dead flat. I had to paddle out for a three. "We high centered the bike on a rock and plugged the two holes. Bruce (Ryon's minder) tried to fill the tire with air and the valve core Dan Johnson's round four sixth place posting was his best in the young series thus far. The day before Johnson dabbed to seventh in the results. leaked." Pressed for time, Bell used the valve core from his minder's bike and finished the event alone. Bell still managed a 23-point loop. Lee posted third place in class on Saturday. • • • For the second week in a row a foreign rider has joined the U.S. National Trials series. Last week in Washington it was Bultaco-mounted David Chaves of Spain. At the Auburn. California round it was Freddie erosset of Belgium. Crosset is the Belgian national champ and currentiy sits third in the European championship. The Gas Gas sponsored rider was reportedly testing the waters for a possible move to the U.S. Since he holds a current Belgium iicense. Crosset contested the event as an exhibition rider. U.S. Montesa sponsored championship class rider Andy Johnson suffered a broken tibia from a nasty get off in Saturday's event. Obviously disappointed. the 17-year old only lives 20 minutes from the Mammoth Bar facility and was hoping for good resuits on his home turf. Doctors reported that Andy will be able to resume training in 6 to 8 weeks. Young Canadians continue to dominate the High School division. grabbing four out of the top five positions on Saturday and five out of the top seven on Sunday. Four of the boys live on Vancouver Island. within a few miies of each other. and practice together after school. Turn about is fair piay. Geoff Aaron spent the week before the Washington event at Ryon Bell's home on Vancouver Island, practicing at Ryan's awesome riding area. Naturally. it was very slippery. immediately after the Mammoth Bar event. Ryan Bell was seen loading up his Montesa for a week's worth of practice at Geoff Aaron's place in Southern California. What's the riding like? .. Dry. grippy rocks." Geoff will tell you. Fred Crosset of Belgium won the battle of the exhibition riders with a score of 55 on Saturday and a 49 on Sunday. This would have won both events had his score counted in the series. Spaniard David Chaves would have finished eighth and fifth for the two events. The California round was very much a family affair with several father/son entries. a father/daughter entry and one husband/wife act competing. Andrea Davis and her father Steven were the daughter/father act while Andrea's sister Jana competed in the youth event. Will and brother Bo Ibsen and father Bill: Cody Webb and father Kipp: Keith Wineland and father Sam: Ben Wehling and father Mike: Keith Sweeten and father Dennis: Harrison Oswaid and father Hap: Mark McGregor. brother Michael and father John: and John and Kevin Scott made up the son/father duos while Pam and Ron DeBruin were the wife/husband team. Brothers Clive and Bob Hannon competed as well. cue I e n e _ so • APRIL 26, 2000 27
