SANDERSON BINGHAMTON, NY, APR. 1-2 ,-r he 2000 motocross season got U under way at the Broome-Tioga Sports Center on April Fools' Day. The two-day event featured a District 3 points race each day and a Loretta Lynn's area qualifier. Youth classes qualified on Saturday; all other classes qualified on Sunday. Just over 300 riders registered to race the 23 classes slated for Saturday's program. Phil Nicoletti nailed the holeshot and never looked back in the first 85cc (7- 11) moto. When the leaders came off the supercross section, the top five were Nicoletti, Ryan Sebastian, Phillip Harris, Frank Burns and David Weingarten. Nicoletti had an l1-second advantage by lap three. When the leaders came off the front supercross section on lap three, the top five were Nicoletti, Harri5, Burn5, Weingarten and Tim Sullivan. Nicoletti took the checkers with a lead of more than 20 seconds, followed by Harris, Burns, Weingarten and Marshall Hurd. Frank Burns earned holeshot honors in the second 85cc (7-11) moto. In tow were Mike Gesso, Nicoletti, Harris and Mike Nentwig. Nicoletti emerged from the front section as the leader, with Burns, Gesso, Nentwig and Harris trailing. Harris crashed on the front section on lap two, which allowed Weingarten to move up to fifth. Nicoletti managed to increase his lead to 17 5econds by lap three. Gesso passed Burns for second on the front section. Nentwig and Weingarten held fourth and fifth, but Hurd, in sixth, was shOWing Weingarten his front tire. Hurd made the pass on Weingarten for fifth on the last lap. Nicoletti finished the moto with a 16-second lead. Rounding out the top five were Gesso, . Burns, Hurd and Nentwig. The overa II win went to Nicoletti for hi5 perfect 1-1 score. Burns and Gesso rounded out the class podium. Nicoletti also took the 65cc (10-11) victory. Scottie Rich got the jump off the Broome-Tioga concrete starting pad in the first 125cc A moto but was quickly passed by Mike Peat for the lead. Rounding out the top five through the first turn were Jimmy Miller and Mike 32 APRIL 26. 2000' c u e • e Wilcox. Miller had the point position by the start of the second lap, trailed by Rich, Wilcox, Matt Hunt and Mike Ayen. Wilcox managed to pass Rich for second coming off the back hill at the back of the racecourse. Mike Dougherty, charging hard after a lackluster start, had moved into fifth by the start of lap three. Hunt passed Rich for third on lap three. Dougherty was still holding fifth halfway through lap three. When the leaders came off the 5upercross section, the top three remained unchanged, with Dougherty now in fourth and Ayen back in fifth. Dougherty, on the move and charging hard, passed Hunt for third at the end of lap three. By the start of lap four, Wilcox wa5 all over Miller but couldn't get around for the pass. Wilcox finally got a pass on Miller to stick at the end of lap five on the back hill. The first 125cc A moto went in the record books as Wilcox, Miller, Dougherty, Hunt and Shawn Nutt. Dougherty got a great jump off the gate and piloted his YZ to the front of the pack to claim holeshot honors and the early lead in the second 125cc A moto, trailed by Wilcox, Alex Blackwell, Miller and Rich. Wilcox went down in the turn before the front supercross section's tabletop, dropping out of the top five. The leaders were now Dougherty, Blackwell, Peat, Miller and Ayen. Dougherty had a 12-second lead by the start of lap two. The top five remained unchanged on lap three, but Miller managed to pass Peat for third on the front supercross section on lap four. Dougherty took the checkered flag with a 15-second lead, followed by Blackwell, Miller, Peat and Ayen. Dougherty took the overall with his 31 score. Rounding out the podium were Miller and Blackwell. Sunday dawned cloudy and just got downright nastier as the day wore on. By midafternoon, the track was deteriorating rapidly. It was finally decided to call it a day after the first set of motos. Some 450 riders had signed up to compete in 22 classes. Mike Wilcox nailed the 125cc A/Pro-Sport holeshot, but Mike Finnerty had the lead by the next turn, dropping Wilcox to second. Jay Jones was in third, Mike Ayen fourth neVIl's Richard Pinney (928) leads the pack in the 250cc A class at the Broome-Tioga Sports Center's season opener. and Willie Bozack fifth. By this time the track was pretty slick, but that didn't seem to phase Finnerty. He had a seven-second lead by the start of lap two. Ayen passed Jones back for good on lap three for third. Finnerty took the checkered flag with a 12-second advantage. Rounding out the top five were Wilcox, Ayen, Mike Peat and Bozack. Terry Kuhn was the first rider through the hairpin first turn in the Vet A class, trailed by Manfred Salver05e, Gene Nighman, Dag Boyesen and Gary Lussier. Boyesen passed Nighman for third by the next turn, jU5t before the pack disappeared into the front supercross section, where Boyesen moved into the lead. Kuhn, Salverose, Lussier and R.ichard Pinney gave pursuit. Boyesen had a 12-second lead on lap two. Salverose passed Kuhn for second.
