There were puzzled faces and much scratching of heads at
the Japanese Grand Prix on April 8 when the long-awaited
announcement came from the FIM concerning the regulations for four-stroke GP machines in the SOOcc class, As
expected, the class will be opened to four-strokes from
2002. Also as expected, the capacity limit will be 990cc,
with various weight limits for different numbers of cylinders
(three cylinders - 297 pounds; three cylinders with oval
pistons - 319 pounds; four and five cylinders - 319 pounds;
four or more cylinders with oval pistons - 341 pounds; six
or more cylinders - 341 pounds).
Further, there was no surprise in limitations on fuel tank
capacity for two-strokes and four-strokes. The surprise
came in the framing of the rules, which banned twin-cylindef machines, and at the same time allowed them. The
"Alice in Wonderland" contradiction was very hard to
understand, though it is clearly aimea at protecting production-based Superb ike racing, and ensuring th.at any
four-stroke GP bikes will be genuine prototypes rather than
road-based mach.ines.
The World Supersport Championship kicks off at Phillip Island in Australia on April 23, running in conjunction
with round two of the World Superbike
Championship.
Tickets are currently on sale for the third
round of the Formula USA Wrenchead.com National Road Race
Series, scheduled for Road America in
Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, May 19-21.
Tickets are $20 for Sunday's main event
