Naoki Matsudo was next, a good result on a stock TZ, the Petronas rider dropped back after a good start, but managed to stay clear of the next group, where Anthony West's NSR Honda had. fallen back into the clutches of Franco Battaini's Aprilia and wild card Osamu Miyazaki's TX Yamaha. West .impressively managed to hold them at bay, in spite of being a first-timer at this tricky circuit. Ralf Waldmann was the most notable of four crashers, the German veteran was '0n his way through the field after a bad start. He'd reached eighth place, with 15 laps to go, when he higbsided on the exit from the chicane. Nakano hangs on to the points lead with 66 to Katoh's 61. Jacque has 46, Ukawa 36, West 30 and Melandri 25. forth. Then Lucio Cecchinello crashed the Givi Honda at the hairpin in· the middle of it, breaking it up somewhat so that champion Emilio Alzamora, Ivan Goi and wild card Hideyuki Nakajoh escaped up front for a while. Then Arnaud Vincent, wild card Yuzo Fujioka and Frenchman Randy de Puniet caught up again to cross the line all in that order, after much shuffling aro\,nd, fifth to 10th covered by barely three seconds over the line. Jurgen Ui's red Derbi was first out of the traps, with Gianluigi Scalvini's Fontana Aprilia chaJlenging hard and even nosing ahead a couple of times, until the Italian crashed spectacularly on the second lap. By then, LocateUi was already in front of him, and he passed Ui in a strong outbraking battle into the chicane. From then on, the Italian rider seemed in control, Ui was in pursuit, and the field straggled out behind, with Azuma picking his way through from 16th on lap one. By lap four, Ueda had got to the front of the chase, and soon broke away, with Gino Borsoi and his UGT Aprilia going with him for a while before dropping back for a lonely run, interrupted only as Azuma caught up and came past on lap 15.
