Fick, Webster In a Word, Fast By K cue • Albany Motorsports Parte '" ::0 S U i;; ~ :J: 0.. Albany Motorsports Park: Tony Graves (186) was a two-class winner in Pro-class action at the final round ot the CMC Northwest Winter Series in Albany, Oregon, topping the 250cc and Over 30 Pro classes, both with 1-1 sweeps. Adam Metzler, Ryan Huege and Brock Chappelle; however, in moto two, Fick's ride went awry. With a large lead in hand, Fick fell, leaving him well behind his archrival, Webster, at the end of the first lap. Webster capitalized on Fick's misfortune and took a lead that he would not relinquish. Fick, though, forged through traffic at a blistering pace, passing several riders each lap. With three laps remaining, Fick displaced Huege and then set out after the second-placed rider, Metzler. This set up a battle which went on for several laps, until Fick finally flew past Metzler. By the time Fick moved into second, though, Webster was long gone. Although Fick trailed Washington's Webster at the finish, both riders posted overall wins, as Webster was contending in the 80cc (12-13) class and Fick in the 80cc (14-16) division. Trailing Fick in the 80cc (1416) class were Huege (who, prior to the final round, had already clinched the class title) and Alex Hill. 65: 1. Greg Fouts (Kaw); 2. Matthew Spencer (Kaw); 3. KTM-mounted Rory Sullivan had one of his best Clays this season with an overall win in the Before The Hill Intermediate class. Honda rider Joey Mancuso handily topped Sullivan in the first moto, but Mancuso was well behind the rest of the field at the end of the first lap in moto two as Sullivan opened up a comfortable lead on r--""-'rT"""""~----------"'----------'-::---'---I!;:Albany, Oragon 26, 2000 [Final Round] Results: March Friday APRIL CLAY liGHT ALBANY, OR, MAR. 26 awasaki-mounted Tyler Fick and Honda rider Kenny Webster clashed in two classes during the final round of the CMC-sanctioned Northwest Winter Series at the Albany Motorsports Park, but the 15-year-old Fick was the fastest gun in three of four Supermini and 80cc age-group motos. Fick led the first of two combined 80cc motos, posting a wire-to-wire win in the class ahead of Webster, SIIn ... SIIn , California 1IlIsa1ts: March 10-11, 2000 52 The fast-starting Metzler won moto two by a large margin, leaving Beyer and Mancuso to battle over second place, a position that Mancuso would own for much of the moto until he fell. Sullivan was right there to scoop up the position after getting past Beyer, and the finishing order was Metzler, Sullivan, Beyer, Sean Connaghan, Mancuso, Williams and Wallace. Former full-time AMA National and Supercross contender Tony Graves scored two overall Pro-class wins, topping the 250cc class with his double moto victory ahead of Jason Mathews, Beyer and Ryan Hagemann. In the Over 30 Pro class, Graves, riding the Herb's Cycletown/Eugene Suzuki-backed RM, beat iron man Beyer (a three-class contender) and David Germain to sit atop the podium. Jason Smith and Frank McKuhn finished fourth and fifth overall. CN CMC Northwest Winter Series Final round: Albany Motorsports Park ers took on the exact same layout as the pros - as opposed to the "tamed" version that is usually used when the amateur racing is held (separately) on Sundays. The OTHG and 65cc classes were the only non-Pro classes featured on both nights of racing. On Friday, Hodges took the OTHG win over Yamaha racer John Connelly and After Shocks-sponsored Greg Douglas. Saturday's race featured an even more talented field, with some new names on the roster. When the gate dropped for the OTHG heat race, Hodges took charge right away, and the field gave chase. Jeff Willoh/ Stiffie-backed Suzul;d racer J.R. Mason was late getting to the sta~t, and he took off half a lap behind the pack. Out front, Hodges raced in the lead, but all eyes were on Mason as he charged hard to catch and pass several of the backmarkers as he made up time. When the brief heat was over, Hodges had taken the win over Bobby Deason - but it was clear that Mason would be right in there in the main event. The cheering fans who packed the arena saw Mason abscond with the holeshot in the OTHG main event, with Deason, Hodges and the rest in tow. As Mason tried to run away, Hodges went to work on Deason and barged by after a short battle. As Mason rode smoothly and somewhat conservatively out front, Hodges rode the edge and hit the jumps hard, and he slowly chipped away at his opponent's lead. Hodges would close in when the leaders were in the jump sections, but Mason would squirt away around the turns, so it took Hodges most of the race to get close enough to challenge Mason. Hodges finally dislodged mason for the lead, and at the end it was Hodges with the win, followed by Mason, Deason, Ken Keegan and Kent Brown. "I just got this new FMF bike, and that's the first race all weekend that I didn't get a holeshot in," said Hodges. "I had to work for that one. I had to get aggressive out there." CN e n e _ s Yamaha rider Matt Williams and central Oregon's Will Wallace. Mancuso began a charge through the pack to catch the top four, but by that time all of his energy was expended, and Sullivan clinched the overall win with a 2-1 tally, ahead of Williams (2-2). Mancuso's 1-5 tally earned the CR pilot third overall, followed by Sean Connaghan (4-4), Wallace (6-3) and Devin Connaghan (5-9). In the combined Before The Hill Junior class, Jason Loomis, riding a KTM, won both motos ahead of two Yamaha-mounted Washingtonians, David Coffey and Mark Bunker. The two YZ pilots traded positions in both motos, with Coffey (3-2) getting the lock on the position, ahead of Bunker (2-3), Oregon's Justin Jensen (5-4), Brandon Sinden (4-5) and Tim Ricketts (6-6). Suzuki jockey Ryan Metzler dominated the combined 125cc Pro/Intermediate motos for the second race in a row. Metzler claimed the holeshot each time out, leading the lone Pro, Gary Beyer, to the finish in the first moto. P/W (4-6); I. Vernon Foster (KTM); 2. Cody Raynor (KTM); 3. Austin UJlrich (Hon); 4.
