AMA/EA Sports Supercross Series Round 13: Texas Stadium By MATT FREEMAN PHOTOS BY K,NNEY JONES IRVING, TEXAS, APR. B I t's been over a year since Kevin Windham celebrated a Supercross win. His last came on February 27 inside Irving's Texas Stadium at round eight of the '99 series. A broken collarbone and a separated shoulder that occurred about a month later kept the Cajun from completing that series, but the 2000 circuit has been frustrating in a different way. As the young and healthy Honda rider traveled to Irving this year for round 13 of the AMAlEA Sports Supercross Series, he was well aware of the fact that he was long overdue for a win. So, in front of an audience of 46,402, Windham restored the faith of his fans and himself by running away, much like he did last year in tbe same venue, with the win. "I've been trying everything, and it's not like I did anything different today," said the Honda rider after the race. "It just finally all fell into place, and it feels feally good after stressing myself out. The bike was working great, tires were working great. 12 APRIL 19. 2000' "" U ,"" I e Everything was going good. The heat was great. All night I got out good and got a little lead." All this after last weekend in Pontiac, Michigan, where Windham had showed much promise by beating the often infallible Jeremy McGrath in his heat, only to slip to third in the main after leading briefly and then fading. The action in Texas Stadium started much the same, with Windham beating McGrath in the second heat. The Honda rider's heat time was approximately four seconds faster than David Vuillemin's heat-one victory. In the main Windham managed to avoid a first-turn crash, brought on by McGrath, who had grabbed the holeshot and then grabbed a soil sample, but that's a whoie ot~er story in itself. Windham then proceeded with the iead and the win. All season long, Windham's conditioning had been questioned by many, but his n e _ s (Above) Honda's Kevin Windham won his first main event of the series and he did so with a Texas-size lead. . (Below) Like Windham, David Vulilemin won his heat race going away, but in the main he got caught up in some traffic before he could challenge Windham. Stili, the Yamaha rider finished runner-up.
