125cc C overall as the fourth round of the U.S.
Eastern Spring Motocross Series came rolling
into Rolling Hills Cycle Park. Kutschenko
made the best of the perfect track conditions
at one of North Carolina's oldest motocross
venues, recording a consistent pair of second·
place finishes to nab the overall.
The 125cc C class has always been
known for large rider turnouts and a mixed
array of results, and today was no different.
Jacob Baertlein had the field totally covered
in the first moto as he nailed down the
holeshot and went on for the mota win
untouched. Kutschenko. on the other hand.
had to make up for a mediocre start but did a
fine job working up to second place by
moto's end. Along the way, Kutschenko displaced Robby Motsinger and David Bauer
back to third and fourth, respectively, while
Honda-mounted Dustin Oats squeaked into
fifth by the flag.
Moto two was a complete turnaround
from the first. with the exception of
Kutschenko. While first-moto winner
Baertlein floundered around back in ninth,
Kutschenko held steadfast for another second-place finish after leading the opening
two laps. The man on the move in moto two
was Oats, who was obviously not happy with
his fifth in moto one. With a decent start,
Oats took charge of the field by the halfway
point and that was all she wrote. Although
Kutschenko kept him in sight. it was Oats'
moto to win. Bauer bettered his finish by one
place, which slipped him on to the podium
behind Kutschenko and Oats, while
Motsinger came home with a fourth.
Although Baertlein could not match his perfect first-moto performance in the second goaround, his one moto win did help him
secure a top-five finish, with fifth overall.
There was also some fine racing in the
80cc (12-13) class. Wes Gauldin held on to a
healthy lead in the first moto, only to slip up
and find himself in third at the checkered
flag. Making the best of Gauldin's misfortune
was SRS Kawasaki-mounted Sam Fitzwater,
who showed why he has won district yearend championships in the past by being in
the position to capitalize on an opportunity in
the first place and then turn it into a mota
win.
When the dust had settled for the day,
Fitzwater was on top of the results sheet
thanks to his first-moto win. Gauldin had
come back for a strong mota win in the second outing, but it was not enough and he
would have to settle for second on the day.
Lexington, North Carolina Kawasaki rider Isaiah Talbert rounded out the top three with 4-3
moto finishes.
