"I wanted to do something different and having grown up a few fnMIeric:bbuI'g Motorspoots Fredaricksburg, VA 54D-89!J.9111O miles from Hollywood, I suppose it 09 was that side of me coming out. There are so many people who helped make it a success. Nigel Harrhy was an extremely big help, and Craiger [Craig Cummings], my best friend and main man, was at the helm the whole time. Martin Ochiltree, Colin Pratt, Kathrin Sorber, Neil Skelding, Mick Sheppard, to be honest there are so many people I want to thank. I would also like to pay tribute to all the riders who took part. Nobody was on big money, and it hopefully shows that I have made a few friends along the way in the last 10 years." An innovative feature on the day was the decision to do away with helmet colors. Instead the riders wore small colored flags attached to the back of their helmets. "In this modern age of speedway all the guys have superbly painted crash helmets, and I think we're all agreed that it's a shame when you can't see them," Hamill said. "This was just one of the ideas I had and I would be interested to know what the fans thought about it. It's something different for them to consider." Fans gave a mixed response to the project, the traditionalists pointing to the fact that helmet colors are vital when identifying the riders. As for the future, Hamill will now concentrate on trying to become the first world champion of the new millennium. "After the back injury I suffered at the end of 1998, I feel I'm ready to make a serious challenge for the title again, and I know I can do it," Hamill said. "The most important thing for me is that I'm enjoying my racing again, and if that can continue then I know I'll be in with a great chance of winning. It's going to be a tough schedule but I have the confidence in my own ability and this is going to be a massive year for me - I'm now totally focused on the Grand Prix series and we'll take it from there. I have a good team around me and by the time the opening Grand Prix comes around I know everything will be in place with my machinery to try and win the first round. I'm looking forward to it already." eN Cavenby International Motor Stadium Cavenby, England Results: March Z6, ZOOO GRAND FINAL: 1. Nicki Pedersen; 2. Billy Hamill: 3. Leigh Adllms; 4.
