Bervoets' win came on a four-stroke Yamaha, and his 21 overall proved that Joel Smets will at least not go undefeated this year. The KTM pilot did, however, finish second, far this year. rider cooperation with the new procedure has been great. The U.S. Forest Service's recent flurry of proposed rules and policy initiatives would virtually wipe out off-highway vehicle recreation on National Forest land. officials have told Congress according to the AMA. The AMA testified before the U.S. House Subcommittee on Forest and Forest Health on April 4. AMA Washington representative Edward Moreland warned that the Forest Service is acting against the wishes of Congress by scrapping the congressional mandate that requires the varied use of forest land. Instead. Moreland testified. the federal agency's focus on what it refers to as .. ecological sustainability" could shut down virtually all forest land to motorized recreation. "Any attempt by the Forest Service to change its mandate without congressional approval is illegal. and should not be considered part of any proposed rule." Moreland said. The AMA joined a variety of outdoor recreation groups to testify at the oversight hearing posting 1-2 finishes on the sandy track despite a mota-two fall, and he's atop the point standings with 112 to Bervoets' 89. Third place went to home rider Gem-Jan Van Doorn on a VOR. Husqvama's Stefan Everts failed to make his 500cc debut, as his broken arm is still on the mend. "Now I can go to Spain in two weeks and look at gaining some more points on Smets," said Bervoets. Bolley's victory was the first this year for the defending champion, and the Frenchman traded moto wins with countryman Mickael Pichon. The Corona Suzuki rider was second on the day to retain the points lead, 105-72 over Bailey. The class was an all-French affair in Holland, with Winfield/Kawsaki rider Mickael Maschio taking third. Bailey's Pamo/Honda teammate, American Ryan Hughes, had hoped to return to racing in Holland, but his wrist was still not ready (see sidebar). "I'm still 33 points behind Pichon in the championship," said Bailey, "but we have a long way to go, so I'm not worried about that." In the 125cc ranks, Langston's win came with a perfect I-I score, leading a Euro-bike domination of the tiddler division, Langston was KTM-mounted, as was runner-up James Dobb, and American Trampas Parker was third on an Italian TM. The KTM duo leads the championship chase, with Langston holding 99 points and Dobb 13 points back, American Mike Brown posted 6-3 scores, and is third in the points chase with 73. "The KTMs are mile better than anything else," Dobb said. "I think this is an important message for the Japan- ese." Geoff Meyer on the effect of new Forest Service rules on national forest recreation. The Blue Ribbon Coalition. United Four Wheel Drive Associations. America Outdoors. and the Southem Sierra Fat Tire Association joined the AMA at the hearing. "I am confident that representatives from the Forest Service and members of the antiaccess community will argue that the total decimation of off-highway vehicle recreation is not their plan." Moreland testified. "However. I am here to tell you that if each of the myriad of proposed rules is implemented. we are looking at the last of motorized recreational access on our public lands as we know it. ..
