Paul Edmondson (Kaw) won the Grand National Cross Country round in Morgantown. North Carolina. on April 2. Edmondson scored the win over Shane Watts (KTM) and Barry Hawk (Yam). Steve Hatch (Suz) and Fred Andrews (Kaw) rounded out the top five overall. While the FIM 125cc World Motocross Championship is seeing new faces at the top of the podium so far this young season. the 500cc class is being dominated by multi-time champion Joel Smets. a trend that continued this weekend. At the second 125cc round in P1omion. France. on April 2. Carl Nunn won both motos on his Yamaha YZ125. advancing to fifth place in the point standings. The Brit was trailed in moto one by KTM's Grant Langston, American TM-rider Trampas Parker, Husqvama's Thomas Traversini and James Dobb. Moto two saw Yamaha-mounted Alessandro Puzar finishing second ahead of Langston, Dobb and Honda-mounted American Mike Brown (10th in the first outing). Parker was seventh in moto two. The points standings now have Langston on top wi~ 59 points, followed by Dobb with 56, Traversini with 49, Brown with 48 and Nunn with 47. "I always knew that I had the speed: said the 20-year-old Nunn, "But now I have the confidence to go with it." Meanwhile, at the second 500cc round on the same day in Castiglione del Lago, Italy. KTM's Smets rode to 3-1 moto finishes for the overall win. Smets had won both motos at the opening round. The Belgian was bettered in the first outing by Yamaha's Marnicq Bervoets and Husqvarna-rider Darryl King, and trailed by Yamahamounted Italian brothers Andrea and Max Bartolini. Moto two saw Smets win over KTM cohort Peter Johansson, defending champion Andrea Bartolini (who is suffering from tendonitis in his wrist), and Husqvarna duo Miska Aaltonen and Fabrizio Dini, while Bervoets Geoff Aaron (G-G) left rounds one and two of the AMA NATC Observed Trials Series in Goldendale. Washington. April 1-2. with two victories. On Saturday. Aaron beat Raymond Peters (Bull and Ryon Bell (Mon) in taking the victory. Round-two action on Sunday saw Aaron on top again. but Peters dropped to third and Bell fell back to fifth. Jess Kempkes (G-G). who posted a fourth the day before. finished second. Aaron goes into rounds three and four in Auburn, California, April 8-9, with 14·point advantage over Peters. Former World Speedway Champion Billy Hamill was the hero of the day at Coventry International Motor Speedway in Coventry. England, when he celebrated a decade in British speedway with a highly successful testimonial meeting on March 26. The race took place before thousands of fans from Coventry and also from Hamill's former club. Cradley Heath. Danish rider Niki Pederson won the main event at the meeting, with Hamill finishing second. ahead of Australia's Leigh Adams and reigning World Speedway Champion Tony Rickardsson of Sweden. brought an XR750 and a 600. and also tested the Team Powell/Sunoco Suzuki TL1000 of Bill and Carolyn Powell. Tysor showed up with his personal Yamaha WR400. which has been converted into a pseudo-dirt-tracker. in order test the 400's engine performance against that of restricted 600s. The riders took part in various sessions, running the various types of equipment together in order determine how they would work in actual competition. When it was all over. PACE Motor Sports Vice PreSident Mike Kidd, who was in attendance at the test. was very pleased. "The most important thing is that we are confident that we can run the various equipment together safely.' Kidd said. "Also. we were pleased to see that our transponder system worked flawlessly all day. I was also really surprised to see how close the 600s and 750s ran together. and how the 1000 actually improved with the addition of restrictors. We want to thank the various riders for their participation, cooperation and input. Having such knowledgeable teams was very important, and they were all very receptive to what we were attempting to accomplish at the test. • PACE Motor Sports sanctioning body Formula USA conducted its scheduled test at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis on April 1 in order to test the transponder system that will be used in qualifyin9. and to gather data for equipment eligibility and restrictor rules for the upcoming Wrenchead.com National Dirt Track Series, which opens at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas. on May 6. Taking part in the test were some of the top AMA dirt track teams in their respective classes. Reigning AMA Grand National Champion and multi-time AMA 600cc National Champion Chris Carr headed the list of participants. Joinin9 him were factory HarleyDavidson team rider Rich King, top-running AMA/Supertrapp SuperTracker rider J.R. Schnabel and Continental Tires representative and GNC short-tracker Greg Tysor. Carr's H-D of Sacramento team rolled out two Harley-Davidson XR750s and one 600 for the test, while King had a trio of Bill Werner-prepared XRs and Schnabel 2 APRIL 12. 2000' c: U c: I The Clayton Foundation Super Ticket 2000 is currently available. with each $100 ticket enabling spectators to see the Hangtown Motocross Classic. the AMA Superbike National at Laguna Seca. the Old High\(llay 40 Motorcycle Days at Donner Ski Ranch. the Sacramento Mile and the Fast Fridays AMA Speedway National Championships. Over 225 riders raised a record $48.360 on Sunday, March 19. at the San Bernardino Dual Sport Ride for Kids. The first such event of the season took place under sunny skies at the Glen Helen Motorsports facility in San Bernardino. Califomia. Actor Perry King was on hand. as was desert racer Paul Krause with two-year-old son Brandon, a brain tumor patient who has been receiv- ing chemotherapy. Dr. Stuart Siegel. of the Children's Hospital of L.A.. prOVided additionat inspiration to the riders about how proud he is of the work the motorcyclists are doing to help find the cause and cure of children's brain tumors. This year's top fundraiser was Ed Schneiderhan with $7005. The Orange County Dualies once again led the club fundraisers. bringing a whopping $17.379. The number-one dealer was Fineline Motosports. whose customers brought $13.110 to help the kids. Damien Mendoza was the lucky winner of a brand-new Honda motorcycle. courtesy of the Honda Rider's Club of America. Tread Lightly! recently announced its Convergence Dialogue Series. planned to serve as a catalyst for bringing together representatives of varying recreational interests to open lines of communication. build a foundation of common ground. discuss pertinent issues and develop a strategic plan for the continuation of responsible recreation. The first of the series' three meetings was already held in Durango, Colorado. and the second one (themed "Setting a Course of Action') will be held in conjunction with the National Trails Symposium on September 20 in Redding.
