Designs/Bill's Pipes pilot took his RM250 to a wire-to-wire victory. Although Davis kept Holland in sight, he never got close enough to make a move and instead worked on maintaining his position. It. was a smart move, because with Pestana behind him, the all-important overall was his. Pestana gained a little ground, but a flat rear tire ended any hope he had of catching Davis. "Jeff wanted me bad out there," said Davis, "but I rode smooth, and even though I made a couple of mistakes, I felt good in that moto." Holland simply owned the 125cc Pro class. Although Pestana led early on in moto one, Holland was simply the fastest rider on the track, and once out front he was never challenged. '" think I tried too hard in that first 250cc moto," Holland later said, commenting on his crashes. "I should have had both overalls today, but I'll take this one." Pestana followed up with a consistent 2-2 score, just not able to match Holland's blistering pace. One of the highlights came in the second moto when Davis and Fox/Merced Powersports/George Holland/Scott-backed Truglio put on a crowd-pleasing. head-to-head fight for third. The battle lasted the entire moto, and while neither rider let up, Truglio made a costly mistake, bobbling in a tight left-hander and allowing Davis to scoot by on the outside. Truglio continued to give chase all the way to the checkers, but Davis hung on to post a 3-3 score for third overall, while Truglio checked in with a 5-4 effort for fourth. Randy Norman, aboard a North County Yamaha, topped the 125cc and 250cc Intermediate classes. Although Norman dominated the 250cc class, he had a tough time in the second 125cc race, as David Boothe, piloting a Clawson Motorsports/ Axo/Rentha I/Wiseco -backed Suzuki, hounded Norman early on. In fact, Boothe had won the first moto, and he was determined to win this one, challenging Norman in every turn. At one point, Boothe made a pass on Norman that he couldn't make stick and watched Norman shoot right back by over a long tabletop. Still, Boothe stuck to Norman's rear fender until the two tangled in the right-hander just before the finish line. Boothe went down and Norman went on to take the victory. and the overall. "Boothe came in hot on the outside and we clipped handlebars," Norman said. "I stuck to my line, and I guess he had nowhere to go and his front end washed out." Boothe was visibly dejected but took it in stride. "It was my fault," he said. '" let off too early coming into the turn and I knew he would be right there.
