• I , • Antron Brown, and Team Winston's Angelle Seeling. Mullen was also solidly in the low 7.3-second zone on race day, but his performance came with a price. "We made an awesome first pass and then went south a little," Mullen said. "We hurt an engine in qualifying, and then on Saturday night we had an electrical problem. My brother, Jimmy, [crew chief] Harry Lartigue and our crew stayed up until four in the morning, completely rewiring the bike. In fact, Dave [Schultz] even came over on Saturday night and lent us a hand. We wouldn't have made it at all if it weren't for them." For her part, Seeling was generally unfazed by the loss, especially since she did her job by nailing the best reaction time of eliminations. Her Star Racing-powered Suzuki was among the quickest bikes in the field all weekend, with a 7.27 in qualifying and a best of 7.31 in eliminations. Against Mullen, Seeling slowed to a 7.39 and lost to Mullen's 7.33 by less than three hundredths of a second at the finish line. Like Hines, Seeling admitted that her bike never made a perfect run all weekend. "The engine bogged on one run, and then I jerked the bike around on another," Seeling said. "We just never made a clean pass to see what we could do. I hope the bike responds better at the next race. It was kind of cool to see someone other than Matt or me in the final. It's good for the class, but I want to win my share of races this year, too. I'm so pumped up right now. When we came down here, I honestly felt like we were gonna get our butts kicked by the Vance £, Hines bikes, but now I've seen that's not the case. I have a new attitude this year. I just want to go out and have fun. If I do that, the wins will come and so will the championship." In the final, Mullen led to half track and appeared to be well on his way to victory, but his bike bobbled late in the run, and Schultz motored by for the win, and the early season points lead. "To me, it was of paramount importance to come out and make a statement at the beginning of the year," Schultz said. "That makes this win, because it happened at the first race of the year and gives me the points lead for at least three weeks, so cool. It makes me think about how killer it would be to put together a championship season. That would be so huge." eN Gainesville Raceway Gainesville, Florida Results: March 16-19, 2000 [Round 1 of 141 PRO STOCK FINAL: 1. Dave Schultz (Su,) 7.28, _ 182.87; 2.
