while, Tupa moved ahead of Uljeblae for third Birch Creek Motorsports Complex and then attempted to pass Fichtelman in Rat· t1esnake Gulch. Albach led by about two sec- onds over fichtelman and Tupa. Then Tupa railed his Honda around Fichtelman and set his sights on Albach. The two racers were separated by less than two bike lengths for the next four laps, until Tupa passed Albach with two laps remaining. Albach stayed close and went in for the kill in the last corner before the white flag came out. Albach attempted a block-pass on Tupa and went down. Tupa cruised the last lap and styled for the crowd en route to the first-moto victory. Albach picked his Suzuki up in plenty of time to remain in second place, ahead of Lee Bacon. The second moto looked likely to be a repeat of the first moto. Fichtelman was the first to the first tum, and he led up to the uphill before Albach took over. This time, however, Albach put his head down and charged. By the time Tupa worked his way into second, Albach had a five-second lead. Tupa attempted to close the gap, but Albach was hooking up on Carlsbad's adobe clay. Albach took the moto win and the overall. Tupa finished second, and Uljeblae finished third for third overall. In the 80cc Novice class, Tyier Keefe kept his run to the championship alive by posting Walker, Walking Away By JAY HAUSER DANVILLE. VA, MAR. 12 Birch Creek Motorsports Complex was one happening place as they opened up the racing year by hosting round three of the U.S. Eastem Spring Motocross Series, which doubled as a Lorettli Lynn's area qualifier. With a massive tumout of LL hopefuls, coupled with the Series regulars, the racing was fantastic, as many riders found themselves racing against unfamiliar competitors. Although the skies were clear and sunny, temperatures stayed low and the wind was almost unbearable, requiring careful navigation when launching off of just about any jump. Southeast legend Kevin Walker is qUickly becoming Birch Creek's favorite son. The multi·time amateur National Champion is looking to keep his win streak alive. The new year opens up yet another class to Walker the Over 30 class. Just for good measure, Walker took his Kingsport Yamaha/Duncan Racing/Balizee/Varner/FMF-backed YZ to a total romp of the 125cc A class as well, recording a perfect six·for-six moto sweep on the day. Walker was truly in a class by himselfl With Walker out. the 250cc A class was wide open. Triangle Cycles Honda-mounted Chad Newton busted out the first-moto win after a hard-fought battle with Suzuki of Gastonia's Stanton Barrett. The pair fought a tight battle that pulled them slightly away from third-place runner Mark Wagner. Following Wagner across the line at the end of moto one was the Yamaha duo of Chris Anstead and YZ400F-mounted Jason Baldwin. Wagner had other plans when the gate dropped for moto two of the 250cc A class. He pushed his Yamaha of Lumberton/Sitec Racing YZ250 out front and never looked back. Wagner rode a perfect moto, keeping Honda rider Troy Crisp at bay the entire time and never faltering. Barrett put in another strong ride to finish a close thjrd, but it was enough to put him into second overall on the day and into a guaranteed spot on the region· al gate. Newton rebounded to capture third overall on the day after a fifth-place ride in moto two, while Crisp and Baldwin rounded out the top five. Another rider turning some heads is Bclass competitor Adam Overcash, who ran off and hid from both the 125cc Band 250cc B riders. Overcash consistently caught up to the top five of the 250cc A boys. who had already had a 20-second advantage. South Carolinian Danny Smith did his best to keep Overcash in his sights in the ] 25cc B class, finishing second, while Tom Parsons got the runner-up honors to Overcash in the 250cc B class. n e _ s Results 50 (4-6): I. SACRAMENTO, CA, FEB. 25-27 Sacramento's own Matthew Spencer won the Kawasaki 65ec Invitational on Saturday in a packed Areo Arena, then came back on Sun· day to win the 65cc (7- II) class. Spencer faced tough competition from Oakdale's Greg Fout, who won Friday night's Kawasaki Invitational, and banged bars with Arenacross regular Dian Klinger from Akron, Indiana, who raced to a pair of podium finishes. A big turnout of mini riders contributed to a record turnout of more than 400 Amateur entries, who competed on a slightly tamer version of the standard arenacross layout. Spencer was quick off the gate in Sunday's 65cc (7-11) main event, but Fout charged to the front through the whoops. Spencer then grabbed the lead back around the finish-line hairpin. This time. Spencer stayed out front for good. roosting away from the pack. Fout held tough in second, ahead of Kramer Patterson and Klinger. Spencer finished first with a big lead over Fout, Patterson, Klinger and Luke Layton. Spencer also raced in the 85cc (7-1 J) class, nabbing third behind Casey Hinson and Bryar Perry_ The 250cc Intermediate racers were led by Evan Laughridge. who launched his Suzuki off the catapult jump ahead of Nick Bainbridge. Billy Jurevich, Danny Barber, Mike Klinger and the rest. Jurevich quickly got by Bainbridge but advanced no further. Laughridge stayed out front_ As Barber and Klinger fought for fourth, they tangled, and Klinger got the worse of it. Laughridge took the win over Jurevich, Bainbridge, Barber and Klinger. Laughridge came back to win again in the 125cc Intermediate class, with Brandon Jones, Jurevich, Dylan Vicha and Don Bainbridge completing the top five. When Casey Ales aced the holeshot in the 250cc Novice class on his Gas Gas, the unusual sight of a headlight-equipped bike out front caught everyone's attention. Unfortu· nately for Ales, his Gas Gas landed hard off of a jump and then refused to go go, leaving Ales with a DNF. Darrell Valasek inherited the lead and never looked back. Dan DeNuzzo diced with Aaron Thompson for second, battling
