20 miles to finish 10th motorcycle
overall aboard an XR600. The O'Neal
entry ran out of fuel at one point,
hurting their chances of the class win.
"San Felipe" Bob Surmon was first
Sportsman rider on a WR280 in a
time of 5:43. Surmon summed the
event up as a "beautiful course." Surmon nearly missed the chance to
experience the event when his gas
disappeared from his truck the previous night. He was forced to scramble
around looking for race gas all morning and found some just in time.
SCORE race organizers, reacting
to safety issues and ecological concerns, started the race 15 minutes
after the scheduled 6:00 a.m. start.
The delay was to allow a helicopter to
fly over the beginning of the course to
make sure there were no man-made
booby traps to contend with.
Negotiating the wlldemess that is
Mexico is a huge part of competing in
a SCORE race, as Ron Wilson does
here while passing a truck. Wilson and
teammate Phillip Zeiger finished a
respective third overall.
As many areas north of San Felipe
are considered ecologically sensitive,
the new course consisted almost
entirely of the four major sand washes west and south of town. Along with
the well-known Matomi Wash, the
course also went through the
Chanate, Azufre and Huatomote
washes.
Out of all the motorcycles that
competed in the revised event, it was
Honda that was the most successful.
Honda Team Manager Bruce Ogilvie
was pleased with the new XR650R's
continued success.
"Obviously I was happy that the
first four bikes were the 650's and
five of the first ten were Hondas,"
boasted Ogilvie.
