"What a testimony to the parenting skills of Rose and ~arl Hayden" about Harley not wanting to win. What the heck is that all about? After last year, you would have thought that Russell would have ridden that thing until it blew up or crashed it while trying to blow it up. Anything rather than just stop like he did. Scheibe and crew didn't lift a hand to try and fix the bike when it came in, so I'm assuming the bike was still in working order - they were just "Rich M.erritt missing a rider. Tacoma. Motocross could be turning full circle. I used to watch Joel Robert and Gerritt Wolsink turn in a top-five finish against Roger DeCoster at the late and very great Puyallup Raceway Park during the Trans AMA Series in the early '70s and those guys were in their late 20s and early 30s. Keep up the great work at Cycle News. Vet riders rule. The Haydens We just read your report on Daytona and especially your editorial regarding Nicky Hayden and his family. Earl and Rose Hayden have raised five children with lots of love and discipline. We first met this remarkable family in 1989 with four of t~eir children - Tom, Nick, Jennifer and Roger - racing at the Dirt Track Amateur Nationals that year. Neither parent ever got in my face, as the referee, or in any other official's face for the five years that the Tote Gray Racing Association and the Peoria Motorcycle Club hosted that event. The kids were timely when called for their races and we were always addressed with "yes, Ma'am and no, Sir." It's hard to believe in this day and age when one questions "do they eat with that mouth also" when hearing the language that rolls of some youngsters' lips. My wife and 1 have followed both Tom and Nicky's road racing careers, as road racing was my "drug of choice" as well. Jennifer and Kathleen have grown up to be beautiful young women and Tom, Nick and Roger are gentlemen in the truest sense. What a testimony to the parenting skills of Rose and Earl Hayden. Jerry and Alma Holm Hanna City. IL Too many liters The fine article about the Yamaha WR400F refers to its four-liter power - 400cc is .4 of a liter. A four-liter dirt bike would truly be a handful. James T. Berry jberryOzoomnet net Physically demanding? You recently had a reader poll question on your website that asked: What is the most physically demanding offroad race in the world? My final answer: The Iditarod Sleddog Race. Any of your other selected venues would be a vacation in comparison. Acree and Ciccotto How many commercials? Let it be known that Lee Acree overshot the chicane in the AMA 750cc Supersport race and torpedoed Mike Ciccotto off the track [giving us that great crash photo last week-Ed]. Acree admitted it on the podium and before accepting the third place trophy he immediately apologized to Ciccotto for running him off the track. I just wanted the fans to know. Mike and I are extremely disappointed, of course. as he was on pace with the leaders. But we also understand that it's just racing, and we will be ready to race at Sears Point. After sitting through the Daytona 200 coverage on espn2, we feel perhaps they can break away for two commercials each lap instead of one every lap. Bill Keys Hayward, CA Jimmy Weinert Being a Roberts has to be a huge obstacle to deal with and Kurtis has done it with hard work and talent. I have a feeling he will be a champion no matter what he rides. Travis R Stidham via tM Internet Disgusted at Russell Norm Viano via the Internet Viano is Mike Ciccotto's manager... Editor. Oldie but goodie I have raced motocross for over 20 years locally and have never been more impressed with anyone's will and determination more than John Dowd's. I don't think I've ever seen anything like what happened in this year's Daytona 200. When he figured he wasn't going to win, he just quit. He came in, snubbed all of the pit guys, blew of Steve Scheibe [the team manager] and the press, got his teddy bear and went home. When he signed with Harley he knew he was signing up to ride a "stove." He knew it wasn't a contender, yet he still signed. Now he's whining to everyone who will listen n _ vv S They don't come any better than that and look how young he is. Maybe Harley should ask Tommy Cummings (TCR Racing) or any of the Michigan Mafia to help with the motors and the riders. They have been proving their worth for over 50 years. Jim Bailey Port Wayne. IN So long, Costa Mesa? I saw your photo of David Vuillemin on your website: my how things have progressed since Jimmy Weinert threw his hands in the air while celebrating at Daytona some decades ago.
