In the Money class, Eddie Ray put his four- stroker out front in both motos, only to lose the lead to Mitchell Cooke, who put on an aerial display for all the spectators, whipping it out over all the jumps. Grain Valley MXP Emig the emir of the Valley GRAIN VALLEY, MO, MAR. 5 Perfect spring weather greeted more than 250 entrants in the opening salvo of the Midwest Spring Championships. Round one, hosted by Grain Valley MXP in Grain Valley, Missouri, drew record numbers of spectators for the championship series. The well-prepped track provided challenges for the riders, and Brian Emig met all challenges. The St. Louis Power Sports/Emig Racing/ Shift-supported Emig swept the three Expert classes on a Suzuki, dominating the field in the Over 30 Expert division. Emig grabbed the holeshot, with Bart Shiflett tucked in tight behind him through the first tum. On the second lap, Emig pulled away from the field, as Shiflett secured second. Kawasaki~mounted Roger Van Meter held off the challenges of John Packard in the rhythm section to claim the final podium position at the end of the first moto. In the second moto, Emig again took the holeshot and emerged with a commanding lead. soaring over the triple, as Shiflett tightened his line through the finish-line corner, preventing Van Meter from making the pass. Packard kept the pressure on Van Meter for four laps but was unable force a bobble. Emig locked up the win with 1-1 finishes, Shiflett was a solid second, and Van Meter finished third overall. Excitement ran high as the third annual Playground Magazine-sponsored series continued throughout the day. Playground publisher Harold Martin, an entrant in three classes, was also on hand to present holeshot awards for each class. Jeff Crutcher powered his Freedom Cycle/ Pro Action of KC/SIDI/PJ1/EVS-sponsored Suzuki to the holeshot in the first 80cc Open moto. Pulling away from Brian Goddard, Crutcher led all five laps on his way to the moto win, while Honda-mounted Pat Meyers was challenged by lack Evans. Evans picked off Meyers on the second lap, chasing down God· dard to take over second on the third lap, but he was unable to present a serious challenge to Crutcher while fending off the repeated attacks of Meyers, who moved up into third after railing by Goddard in the sweeper. Miles Acinger ·came out of the pack to pick off Goddard and Evans and move into third at the finish. Meyers blasted through the first turn first in the second 80cc Open moto, with Evans and Crutcher in furious pursuit. In a daring outside pass, Evans snatched the lead. and Crutcher took advantage and moved into second. Evans' lead did not last long. as on the same lap Crutcher blitzed past Evans through the whoop section and never looked back, increasing the distance between them and sealing his second overall victory of the day. Acinger found the opening he wanted and pro· pelled himself past Meyers on the third lap, taking over third, and Goddard freight-trained (#45J) The 31 st annual running of this event was the wildest in years as twenty of America's best Speedway racers came to the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa, California for this $=>ne-night, winner-take-all war.
