taking the win over Matthew, Gruhn and
Rickard.
The Vintage 2 contest was a rematch of
Crew and Matthews, with Crew dominating the
race, leaving Matthew to battle with Lippert
until the last lap, when Lippert ran olf in the
last sweeper, and Rickard picked up third.
The ninth race was a combination of Formula Two·Stroke and Vintage 6. David Fabin
took the two-stroke win, with Mark Morror and
Tony Smith following. In the Vintage 6 divi-

Braet rides into
the Sunset win
By MERLE ACORD
WALNUT, IL, MAR. 5
Greg Braet christened the new Sunset Ridge
MY.. Raceway - located five miles outside Normandy, Illinois - with two class wins. Braet
had double aces in the 125cc A class after
getting the holeshot in moto one and then a
midpack start in moto two.
Jeremy Bardoner of Genoa, Illinois, challenged early but faded in the later laps.
Former District 17 points champion Jack
Abbott started in the top five in both motos
and then rode rock-steady for a pair of deuces
and second overall. Nate Eslinger washed out
in the sand track and carded 3-4 finishes for
fourth overall. Kawasaki rider Steve Howell of
Monroe Center, Illinois, was fifth.
"I'm having fun out there," said Braet after
the races. "I didn't get the holeshot in moto
two, and I had to work hard to get around Bardoner, and Abbot was on my butt and he was
kind of rubbing me when I was trying to get
around Bardoner. I figured I had to get past
before I got passed myself. I got around and
pulled out a lead, and that's how it went."
In the 250cc A class, Braet aced both
motos. It was a smooth, controlled, highspeed performance by the rider from Moline,
Illinois. Yamaha-mounted Dave Espinoza was
having a good time in the sand, railing the
sweepers, but it just wasn't enough; he went
3-2 for ~ond overall. Eslinger kept Braet in
sight in the first moto, finishing second; then
he slid out in moto two, finishing third and
third overall. Joshua Pistole, doing sky-high
leaps that would have won many jump-off
contests, was fourth overall. Howell was fifth.
"It took me a little while to get going and get
around some of these guys," said Braet. "The
track is getting a little rough, and I didn't want to
fall down and give it away. The bike started to
swap around a IittJe, so I backed it down a bit I
saw Espinoza was closing in the last couple of
laps, so I rode hard enough to keep my lead but
not do something silly, like falling over."
In the 125cc B class, Hawkeye Motors
Honda rider Nick Stottler got two hot-olf-theline starts and came up double aces. Randy
Poulter diced with Dustin Crow edging him for
runner-up with 3-2 finishes. Chad Johnson
was fourth, with Ryan Poulter fifth.
Pistole's weapon of choice in the 14-24
class was a KTM from Factory Phil's. Pistole
came off the line in a hurry and then racked
up major air time off the many tabletops and
other jumps on his way to big-time wins.
Kawasaki rider Chad Johnson had no choice
but to let Pistole go, for he was locked in a
dice with Scott Ryan. The pair traded finishes
for second and third, with Chad getting the
nod. Local rider Erik Fisch carded 4-4 finishes
for fourth overall, followed by Colin Horn.
